High Temperature Test (Military and Industrial Products)

High Temperature Test (Military and Industrial Products)

One of the many services offered within the scope of applied technical services in advanced laboratories today is tensile testing at high temperature. This test assists customers in getting an accurate understanding of the material properties of their products. High temperature testing services are provided for a wide variety of materials for military and industrial use. For example metals, rebar, pipes, fasteners, polymers, tubes, composites and welding work.

High Temperature Test (Military and Industrial Products)

The high temperature tensile test uses a standard tensile test and furnace combination to determine the effects of high temperatures and stress on tensile strength and material properties. Many industries such as power generation, aerospace and automotive require materials with this property to sustain high temperature conditions. Components such as pistons, turbine blades and valves are exposed to high temperatures during service. In this case, the materials that compose them must be strong enough to withstand these extreme service conditions without deterioration.

The purposes of the high temperature tensile test can be listed as follows:

  • Investigating material behavior
  • Evaluate the mechanical and thermal properties of the material
  • To examine the change in the microstructure of the material

This test also provides a comparative measure for strength and ductility. The test data obtained and the stress-strain curve provide technicians with the following values:

  • ultimate power
  • Tensile strength
  • Yield strength
  • elastic border
  • Elongation
  • modulus of elasticity
  • proportional limit
  • Area reduction
  • yield point
  • Ductility

Round or flat samples are tested at temperatures up to 1000 degrees Celsius, with precise temperature control, with modern equipment in advanced laboratories. Various ISO and ASTM standards are complied with in these tests. Here are a few of them:

  • ISO 6892-2 Metallic materials - Tensile test - Part 2: High temperature test method standard. This standard is applicable at temperatures higher than room temperature. explains the tensile test method of metallic materials. This standard includes two speed test methods. The first method (Method A) relies on strain rates with tight tolerances (plus / minus 20 percent). The second method (Method B) relies on conventional strain rate ranges and tolerances. Method A aims at minimizing the variation in test velocities and minimizing the measurement uncertainty of the test results as soon as strain rate sensitive parameters are determined. The influence of test speed on the mechanical properties determined by the tensile test is normally greater at elevated temperature than at room temperature. Traditionally, mechanical properties determined by tensile tests at elevated temperatures have been determined at a slower strain or stress rate than at room temperature. This standard recommends the use of slower strain rates, but higher strain rates are permitted for certain applications, such as comparison with room temperature specifications at the same strain rate.
  • EN 2002-002 Aerospace series - Metallic materials - Test methods - Part 2: High temperature tensile test standard. This standard specifies the elevated temperature tensile test requirements of metallic materials for aerospace applications. The drawing applies when referenced in the technical specification or material standard, unless otherwise specified in the order or inspection schedule.
  • ASTM E21-17 Standard of test methods for high temperature stress testing of metallic materials. These test methods cover the procedure and equipment for the determination of tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and reduction in the field of metallic materials at elevated temperatures. However, the determination of the modulus of elasticity and the proportionality limit are not included. It also does not include stress tests under fast heating or fast strain rates conditions.

In short, the testing process involves holding the sample in one of the precisely calibrated tensile testing machines and separating both ends until it fails according to applicable standards. The data collected from the test is then plotted on a stress-strain curve that measures specific material properties. In this way, the tensile test indicates whether a material is suitable for a specified application.

Military equipment is tested according to MIL-STD-810G Method 501.5, a United States military defense standard. This standard provides a test method developed to evaluate the effects of high temperature conditions on material safety, integrity and performance. Materials and equipment that should be used in areas where the ambient or induced temperature is higher than the standard ambient temperature are evaluated according to this test method. This standard defines three test methods: storage, operation and operational tactical standby.
