MIL-DTL-46100E Detail Specifications: Steel, Forged, High Hardness Armor Plate

MIL-DTL-46100E Detail Specifications: Steel, Forged, High Hardness Armor Plate

The MIL-DTL-46100E standard, a United States military defense standard, covers quenched and tempered high hardness forged steel armor plate for light armor applications for thicknesses ordered from 3mm to 50.8mm.

MIL-DTL-46100E Detail Specifications: Steel, Forged, High Hardness Armor Plate

Forged armor must be in the following classes as specified in the contract or purchase order:

  • Class 1: Forged armor plate which is quenched and tempered liquid (e.g. water or oil)
  • Class 2: Air quenched and tempered / auto-tempered forged armor plate.

If no class is specified, it is assumed to be Class 1.

First, the classification of the examination is made. The inspection requirements specified in the standard are classified as follows:

  • First product review
  • Production acceptance inspection

Unless otherwise stated in the contract or purchase order, the contractor company must fulfill all the requirements in this standard. The contractor company may use its own facilities or other facilities that are suitable for fulfilling the conditions specified in this standard, excluding ballistic tests. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, ballistic test plates will be forwarded to government agencies for initial product or production acceptance.

The main applied test methods are:

  • Chemical analyzes: These analyzes are carried out according to the method specified in the ASTM A751 standard. The analysis must comply with the declared composition, which is formed in accordance with the requirements of the standard.
  • Hardness tests (Brinell hardness tests): These tests are carried out in accordance with ASTM E10 or ASTM E3000 standards using 10 mm carbide ball and 110 kilograms load.
  • Charpy V-notch impact tests: At least six Charpy V-notch impact test samples are taken from the sample and prepared and tested according to ASTM E23 and ASTM A370 standards.
  • Bending test: The bending test is performed in accordance with the ASTM E290 standard using the guided bending test method.
  • Ballistic testing: The ballistic testing of the armor plate is carried out at an official institution, unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order. Testing requirements are included in the annex to this standard.
  • Ultrasonic inspection: Ultrasonic soundness inspection equipment must comply with ASTM A578/A578M.
