MIL-DTL-83513F Detailed Specification - General Specification for Connectors, Electrical, Rectangular, Microminiature, Polarized Shell
The standard “MIL-DTL-83513F Detailed specification - General specifications for connectors, electrical, rectangular, microminiature, polarized shell” developed by the United States Department of Defense describes the requirements for polarized shell, microminiature and rectangular connectors.

According to this standard, the classification is as follows:
- Classes
- P - All plastic (shell and insulator)
- M - Metal shell (plastic insulator)
- types
- I - Clamping contacts (non-removable)
- II - Solder contacts (non-removable)
The requirements in this standard are described as follows:
- Specification sheets: Individual product requirements must be as specified herein and in accordance with the applicable specification sheets. In the event of any conflict between the requirements of this specification and the specification sheet, the latter shall prevail.
- Qualification: Connector assemblies provided under this specification must be products authorized by the qualifying activity to be listed on the applicable qualified products list prior to contract award.
- Statistical process control: The contractor shall implement and use statistical process control techniques in the production process for parts covered by this specification. A statistical process control program shall be developed and maintained in accordance with EIA-557. When statistical process control cannot be used due to discontinuous production requirements, a lot sampling plan for inspection in accordance with the table may be used. Statistical process control and sampling programs shall be documented and maintained as part of the overall reliability assurance program in accordance with EIA-557 and MIL-STD790.
- Materials: Materials shall be as defined herein or approved by the qualification activity. However, when no specific material is specified, a material shall be used that will enable the fasteners to meet the performance requirements of this specification. Acceptance or approval of any component material shall not be construed as a guarantee that the finished product has been accepted.
- Design, construction and physical dimensions: Connectors shall have the specified design, construction and physical dimensions. Connectors shall be designed so that neither pins nor sockets will be damaged during normal mating of opposing connectors.
- Performance: Connectors shall be designed to meet the following performance requirements specified in this standard: magnetic permeability, joining and separation force, contact retention, dielectric withstand voltage, insulation resistance, contact resistance, contact interaction and separation forces, temperature cycling, humidity, resistance to soldering heat, solderability, vibration, shock, durability, salt spray (corrosion), liquid immersion, splice retention (class M), crimp pull-out strength (type I contacts only), low signal level contact resistance, and thermal vacuum outgassing (gap classes only).
- Workmanship: Fasteners and accessories shall meet all design dimensions and compatibility requirements of this specification. Loose contacts, poor molding fabrication, damaged or improperly assembled contacts, peeling or chipping of coating or finish, wear of assembled parts, nicks and burrs of metal parts, and post-molding warpage shall be considered sufficient grounds for rejection of items for inferior quality for the intended purpose.
The principles for verification in this standard are explained as follows:
- Inspection classification. The inspections mentioned here are classified as follows: qualification inspection and conformity inspection.
- Inspection conditions. Unless otherwise specified herein, all inspections shall be performed in accordance with the test conditions specified in MIL-STD-202 and EIA-364.
- Proper length wire per SAE-AS22759/33 (26 AWG): All other connector specimens must be wired to the proper length per this standard. Termination of wires to contacts must be crimped or soldered.
- Test equipment and inspection facilities: Test and measurement equipment and inspection facilities of sufficient accuracy, quality and quantity to permit the required inspection to be carried out shall be installed and maintained by the contractor.
- Assembly facilities. Assembly facilities must be listed or approved for listing on the applicable qualified products list. The qualified connector manufacturer must certify that the assembly facility is approved to distribute the manufacturer's parts. The assembly facility must use only parts supplied by the qualified connector manufacturer.
- Established reliability and high reliability application: This application shall be established and maintained in accordance with the MIL-STD-790 standard. Evidence of such compliance shall be verified by the qualification activity of this specification as a prerequisite for qualification.
- Fungus resistance: Method 810 of the MIL-STD-508.5 standard must be followed.
- Qualification audit: This audit should be performed in a legally acceptable laboratory on sample units produced with the equipment and procedures normally used in production. The use of alternative materials, coatings and processes should be identified for inclusion in the product test documentation.
