STANAG 4381 Blackout Lighting Systems for Tactical Ground Vehicles

STANAG standards, which are NATO standardization agreements, determine the military standards of NATO member countries. The aim of the STANAG 4381 standard published in this framework is to guide member countries in the design and implementation of dimming lighting systems in tactical land vehicles.

Gaining a military advantage often requires military convoys to move in the dark. Vehicles should operate with their standard headlights and taillights turned off, but should use dimming lights to provide sufficient light for driving and limit horizontal and vertical illumination to avoid detection by the enemy.

There are two types of dimming lights on military vehicles: marker lights and driving lights. Dimming beacons indicate a vehicle's position to other drivers in a convoy, but do not illuminate the road. These lamps also act as turn signals during normal conditions. Dimming driving lights, on the other hand, are designed to be invisible to low-flying aircraft and provide a low, diffused beam of light designed to be invisible to aircraft flying above 120 meters, while providing enough light for vehicle drivers to see the terrain directly in front of them.

Dimming light design has always required a difficult balance between providing enough light to activate operations and minimizing the risk of enemy detection. Traditional vehicle dimming lights do not perform well in either area. Also, conventional dimming lights have a high failure rate and are unreliable. The 24-volt incandescent bulbs used in these lamps require a very thin filament, making the bulbs more susceptible to burnout and flicker failure.

However, in recent years light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have made significant advances, providing an opportunity to solve many of the problems of incandescent dimming lights for military vehicles, while also deploying standardized dimming lighting systems across multiple vehicle platforms. Today, new technologies are used in vehicles such as the tracked load system, heavy equipment carrier system and heavy extended mobility tactical truck.

Our organization also provides dimming lighting systems testing services for tactical land vehicles within the scope of STANAG 4381 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
