MIL-STD-810 Method 508 Mold Test

MIL-STD-810 Method 508 Mold Test

This test assesses the extent to which the material promotes mold growth and, if necessary, how this growth may affect the performance or use of the material.

MIL-STD-810 Method 508 Mold Test

A thin inoculation of the mold spore mixture is made on the surface of the sample and then incubated for 28 days at the temperature and relative humidity determined according to the standard to be tested.

MIL-STD-810 H Method 508.8, G1 Method 508.7, G Method 508.6, Method F 508.5, Method E 508.4 Statement 2 (1993) were incubated at a temperature of 30 °C and a relative humidity of 90% or higher.

Earlier versions of MIL-STD-810C Method 508.2, Method D 508.3, and Method E 508.4 (1989 and Statement 1) required a daily temperature cycle of 30 hours at 20oC and 25 hours at 4oC.

MIL-STD-810 C, D, E, F, G, and G1 use the following fungal organisms:

  • Aspergillus niger, also known as Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC# 9642
  • Talaromyces pinophilus #11797, also known as Penicillium funiculosum ATCC
  • Chaetomium globosum ATCC #6205
  • Aspergillus flavus ATCC #9643
  • Aspergillus versicolor ATCC #11730

NOTE: MIL-STD-810 H Method 508.8 replaces Aspergillus versicolor ATCC 11730 with Trichoderma virens ATCC 9645.

MIL-STD-810H Method 508.8 does not cover European strains. However, fungal strains from the USA and Europe can be tested as needed. European strains require an additional 3-4 weeks for reasons such as supply of strains.

At least 4 hours before inoculation, the test item has a preconditioning procedure in the test chamber. Often laboratory professionals prefer to perform this preconditioning overnight so that test specimens can be inoculated early the next day. Because of this necessity, these conditions should be applied when performing the witness test.

Within the scope of our technical expertise, performance evaluation can be made both before and after the mold inspection.

Tests can be tailored to fit any test surveillance requirement.
This is usually a continuous test for 28 days (4 weeks). And longer incubation time can be chosen according to the needs of the demand group.

Usually these tests are scheduled within 7-8 business days after the test sample is received. It is therefore recommended to book in advance in case of an emergency test. Alternatively, notify the lab that an item has been shipped so they can speed up setup.

Test items are evaluated for fungal growth when incubation is complete and if possible fungal growth is confirmed. The final report will include detailed photographs of any mold growth found on the test items and will be published within 7-8 business days of test completion.
