STANAG 4370 Environmental Tests

The STANAG 4370 standard, a NATO standardization agreement, is designed to respond to the described interoperability requirements. The management of environmental testing of defense materials is based on allied environmental conditions and test publications with practices to characterize environments and standardize environmental testing processes.

Hundreds of national standards designed to enhance the competitiveness of the defense industry are considered a major constraint and cost factor. Studies evaluating these standards under headings such as electromagnetic compatibility and, more generally, electromagnetic environmental effects, energetic materials, fuels and lubricants, batteries, packaging, electrical and mechanical interfaces, and environmental testing have identified a limited number of widely accepted and cost-effective standards that align with the Ministry of Defense's procurement needs and the industry's product development requirements. Among these, the NATO STANAG 4370 series of standards has been deemed the best reference.

Comparisons were made with this STANAG 4370 standard on some standards and concluded that:

• No standard is better or worse than another in achieving the ultimate goal.
• There is enough similarity with the STANAG 4270 standard to adopt it as the basic substitution standard.
• On the standards produced by NATO, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the European Union (EN), it is possible to make an agreement to use a set of standards to replace some or parts of existing national standards.

The purpose of the STANAG 4370 standard is to guide the testing of defense materials for environmental management and to standardize environmental testing processes.

The STANAG 4370 standard takes into account a number of national European standards. The comparison study described above demonstrates that this standard is the best procedure for such testing and has the potential to be the procedure of choice. The final version of this standard covers the most technically advanced and innovative components of the three national defense standards on which it is based. STANAG 4370 is supported by an environmental management strategy consistent with, but only comprehensively, the defense procurement approaches used in most European countries.
