(EU) Directive No. 812/2013 Tests

Directive (EU) 812/2013 published by the European Parliament and the Council contains guidelines for energy labeling of water heaters, hot water storage tanks and water heater and solar energy packages.

(EU) Directive No. 812/2013 Tests

The said directive contains requirements for energy labeling and the provision of additional product information for the following products:

This directive describes the requirements for energy labeling and the provision of additional product information regarding:

  • Water heaters with a rated heat output below 70 kW
  • Hot water storage tanks with a storage volume of less than 500 liters
  • Water heater packages and solar device with a rated heat output below 70 kW

However, this legal regulation does not apply to the following:

  • Water heaters specially designed to use gaseous or liquid fuels produced predominantly from biomass
  • Solid fuel water heaters
  • Water heaters covered by the directive 2010/75/EU
  • Combination heaters defined in regulation 811/2013
  • Water heaters that do not meet the load profile with the minimum and smallest reference energy specified in the table in the annex to the directive (EU) 812/2013
  • Kettles designed for making hot drinks or food only

For the purposes of this directive, the term kettle describes a device that:

  • connected to an external drinking or sanitary water supply
  • Generating and transferring heat to provide potable or sanitary hot water at specified temperature levels, quantities and flow rates at specified intervals
  • equipped with one or more heat generators

The term heat generator means the part of a water heater that produces heat using one or more of the following processes:

  • Combustion of fossil fuels or biomass fuels
  • Use of the Joule effect in electrical resistance heating elements
  • Capture of ambient heat from an air source, water source or soil source or waste heat

The rated heat output is the declared heat output of the water heater when providing water heating under standard rating conditions, expressed in kW.
