EN 29367-2 Mooring and Securing Arrangements for Road Vehicles Used in Maritime Transport on Ro/Ro Ships - General Requirements - Part 2: Semi-trailers (ISO 9367-2)

EN 29367-2 Mooring and Securing Arrangements for Road Vehicles Used in Maritime Transport on Ro/Ro Ships - General Requirements - Part 2: Semi-trailers (ISO 9367-2)

The European standard “EN 29367-2 Mooring and securing arrangements for road vehicles used in sea transport on Ro/Ro ships - General requirements - Part 2: Semi-trailers (ISO 9367-2)” describes the minimum requirements, as defined in the ISO 3833 standard, to allow for the efficient mooring and securing of semi-trailers on Ro/Ro ships. This standard specifically defines the mooring arrangements on semi-trailers and the securing method to be used. The annex to the standard includes, for the information of semi-trailer designers, the commonly used securing point arrangements on Ro/Ro ships (Annex A). The standard also includes an annex describing some design considerations to reduce damage during handling (Annex B).

EN 29367-2 Mooring and Securing Arrangements for Road Vehicles Used in Maritime Transport on Ro/Ro Ships - General Requirements - Part 2: Semi-trailers (ISO 9367-2)

The standard “ISO 9367-2 Mooring and securing arrangements for land vehicles used in maritime transport on Ro/Ro ships - General requirements - Part 2: Semi-trailers” published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has also been published for this purpose.

In line with the objectives of the EN 29367-2 standard,

  • A Ro/Ro ship is a ship with one or more decks, normally undivided transversely, closed or open, usually extending the entire length of the ship, onto which goods are loaded by means of ramps or elevators. Cargo, It is transported on self-propelled vehicles on road vehicles, including road tankers, semi-trailers, trailers, trolleys and similar cargo transport units, or on loading vehicles moving between the ship and the shore.
  • The coupling point is the part of the semi-trailer that can be directly connected to the coupling and meets the requirements of this standard.

The mooring points must be designed to secure the semi-trailer to the ship. Each mooring point must be designed for one mooring only. Mooring points can be hinged, fixed or swivel.

The same number of coupling points must be provided on each side of the semi-trailer. Semi-trailers with a gross weight of over 20 tonnes and up to 40 tonnes must be equipped with at least four pairs of coupling points. For semi-trailers with a lower or higher gross weight, manufacturers must provide an appropriate number of coupling points.

It is essential that semi-trailers with closed bodies (e.g. refrigerated bodies) or tank bodies, which have an upper fifth wheel plate integral with the body or tank structure and a kingpin at the front end, have a subframe. Devices that do not have a chassis between these two units, but support the chassis from the rear, must be equipped with the same number of tie-down points to meet the strength requirement.

To ensure flexibility in the longitudinal stowage of the semi-trailer on the ship's deck, free sectors as wide as possible should be provided around the lashing. Examples of alternative stowage positions are included in the standard annex (Annex C).

Each lashing point shall allow free passage through a circle of at least 80 mm diameter, but the opening need not be circular. The thickness of the lashing point material shall permit the attachment of a hook with an opening of at least 25 mm. For hinged or swivel lashing points the size may exceed 25 mm.

After testing, the attachment points shall not show any deformation, breakage or cracks that may affect function. The strength of the attachment points shall be checked by calculation or by a static test in accordance with this standard. Other test methods may be used if at least equivalent efficiency can be demonstrated.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “EN 29367-2 Mooring and securing arrangements for road vehicles used in maritime transport on Ro/Ro vessels - General requirements - Part 2: Semi-trailers (ISO 9367-2)” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
