EN 1175 Safety of Industrial Trucks - Electrical/Electronic Requirements

EN 1175 Safety of Industrial Trucks - Electrical/Electronic Requirements

The European standard "EN 1175 Safety of industrial trucks - Electrical/electronic requirements" describes the electrical requirements for the design and construction of electrical installations in self-propelled industrial trucks, which are covered by the standard "ISO 5053-1 Industrial trucks - Vocabulary - Part 1: Types of industrial trucks". However, the following vehicles defined in the ISO 5053-1 standard are outside the scope of this standard:

EN 1175 Safety of Industrial Trucks - Electrical/Electronic Requirements

  • Variable reach trucks
  • Straddle carriers
  • Specific functions, components or systems used for automated operation of driverless industrial trucks

This standard provides parts of electrical/electronic and safety-related control system requirements to complement the requirements in the relevant part of the EN ISO 3691 series and EN 16307 series standards for self-propelled industrial trucks mentioned above.

This standard is referenced in other standards covering the non-electrical requirements of various types of industrial trucks.

The requirements of this standard apply when trucks are operated in the following climatic conditions:

  • Climatic conditions defined in the applicable parts of the EN ISO 3691 series and EN 16307 series standards
  • Relative humidity (non-condensing) conditions in the range of 30 percent to 95 percent

This standard addresses the safety requirements for all electrical and electronic components of industrial trucks, including electrically operated hydraulic/pneumatic valves. It specifies the minimum performance levels required for the safety functions performed by the safety-related parts of control systems. This standard is intended to be used to prevent or minimize the hazards or hazardous situations listed in the annex of the standard. These situations may arise during operation in the intended area of use and during maintenance of the trucks in accordance with the specifications and instructions given by the manufacturer.

However, the hazards that may occur in the following situations are outside the scope of this standard:

  • During construction
  • When working in potentially explosive environments
  • Due to failure of non-electrical safety-related parts of control systems (e.g. hydraulic and pneumatic elements such as pistons, non-electrical valves and pumps)

The required performance level defined for electrical safety-related control systems can be used as a guide to determine the performance of non-electrical systems. Hazards from water and dust penetration are covered by the required performance level definition of safety functions according to the standard “EN ISO 13849-1 Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems - Part 1: General principles for design”.

For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply in addition to the terms and definitions given in ISO 5053-1:

  • The nominal voltage of the truck system refers to the specified value of the voltage of the electrical system and the value to which its characteristics refer.
  • The nominal battery voltage is the number of series-connected battery cells multiplied by the nominal cell voltage according to the cell's chemical technology. If the battery consists of series- and parallel-connected cells, the nominal voltage is defined by the number of cells arranged in a series-connected cell line.
  • Drive system: An electrically controlled system moves the truck over the ground, producing torque acting on one or more drive wheels.
  • Low speed is travel speed below 0,4 m/s for pedestrian trucks and below 0,7 m/s for all other truck types.
  • LHS (electric load handling system) is an electrically or electronically controlled load handling system.
  • Electric power steering is an electric or electronic system that controls the angular position of the truck's wheels relative to the vertical longitudinal center plane.
  • The assistance system is the system designed to improve the operating performance, ergonomics of industrial trucks or to warn the operator about the hazards resulting from improper use in the specific operation related to the working environment and application.
  • The required performance level is the performance level applied to achieve the required risk reduction for each security function.

Essentially, this standard includes the following standards published under the same title:

  • EN 1175-1 Part 1: General requirements for battery-powered trucks
  • EN 1175-2 Part 2: General requirements for trucks powered by internal combustion engines
  • EN 1175-3 Part 3: Particular requirements for electrical power transmission systems of internal combustion engine powered trucks

Our organization has a strong workforce that closely follows global developments in science and technology and continuously improves itself. Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations provided for businesses in various sectors, are testing services compliant with the “EN 1175 Safety of industrial trucks - Electrical/electronic requirements” standard.
