BS 3262 (TS 11180) Hot Applied Thermoplastic Road Marking Materials

BS 3262 (TS 11180) Hot Applied Thermoplastic Road Marking Materials

The BS 3262 standard by the British Standards Institute (BSI) consists of the following sections under the main title of “Hot-applied thermoplastic road marking materials”:

BS 3262 (TS 11180) Hot Applied Thermoplastic Road Marking Materials

  • BS 3262-1 Part 1: Specification for component materials and mixtures
  • BS 3262-2 Part 2: Road performance specification
  • BS 3262-3 Part 3: Requirements for the application of the material to road surfaces

In our country, the "TS 11180 Paints - For traffic road lines - Thermoplastic - Hot applied" standard was later withdrawn and replaced by the following standards:

  • TS EN 1436 Road marking materials - Performance of road signs for road users
  • TS EN 1871 Road marking materials - Paint, thermoplastic and cold plastic materials - Physical properties

The BS 3262-1 standard covers white, yellow and black marking materials. Does not apply to interior materials.

The BS 3262-2 standard describes performance requirements for type approval of white thermoplastic materials conforming to part one. They were melted and hot applied to road surfaces using screeding or spraying as finely superimposed markings for center lines, edge lines, crosswalk strips and the like. This standard does not apply to thermoplastic materials intended to be placed on road surfaces. Preparations are made so that the results obtained on the white material can be applied to both yellow and black materials where the composition of these materials is the same as the white material, except for the pigment of the thermoplastic material. The addition of solid glass beads also prepares for the performance of the materials to be tested. Prerequisites for road performance tests are included in the standard annex (Annex A).

The BS 3262-3 standard also covers white, yellow and black marking materials. Does not apply to interior materials.

Briefly, a hot-applied thermoplastic is a solid compound containing pigments, glass beads, binder and filler that becomes liquid when heated. The fact that it can be applied as both flat and structured markings provides many important benefits in terms of high visibility and road safety.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for hot applied thermoplastic road marking materials, within the scope of BS 3262 (TS 11180) standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
