EN 681-1 Elastomeric Seals - Material Requirements for Pipe Joint Seals Used in Water and Drainage Applications - Part 1: Vulcanized Rubber

EN 681-1 Elastomeric Seals - Material Requirements for Pipe Joint Seals Used in Water and Drainage Applications - Part 1: Vulcanized Rubber

The European standard “EN 681-1 Elastomeric seals - Material requirements for pipe joint seals used in water and drainage applications - Part 1: Vulcanized rubber” describes the following requirements for materials used in vulcanized rubber seals:

EN 681-1 Elastomeric Seals - Material Requirements for Pipe Joint Seals Used in Water and Drainage Applications - Part 1: Vulcanized Rubber

  • Supply of cold drinking water (up to 50 degrees)
  • Hot drinking and utility water supply (up to 110 degrees)
  • Drainage, sewer and rainwater systems (continuous flow up to 45 degrees and intermittent flow up to 95 degrees)

Different definitions of the specified gaskets are made according to their types, applications and requirements.

This standard also includes general requirements for finished gaskets. Additional requirements required by a specific application are specified in the relevant product standards, recognizing that the performance of pipe joints is a function of the gasket material properties, gasket geometry, and pipe joint design. Where appropriate, this standard should be used in conjunction with product standards that specify the performance requirements for joints.

This standard applies to joint seals for all pipe materials including iron, steel, clay, fiber cement, concrete, reinforced concrete, plastics and glass fiber reinforced plastics.

This standard applies to elastomeric components of composite and non-composite seals. For composite seals for materials having a hardness range of 76 IRHD to 95 IRHD, the requirements for elongation at break, compression set, and stress relaxation apply only when the material contributes to the sealing function or the long-term stability of the seal.

Joint seals made with a closed cavity as part of their design are included within the scope of this standard.

In accordance with this standard, the product intended for human consumption, whether in permanent or temporary contact with water, does not adversely affect the quality of drinking water and does not contravene the European Union directives and EFTA regulations on drinking water quality.

Six classes of materials and five classes of materials for pipe joint seals are specified in the tables provided in the standard. Nominal hardness should be specified within the ranges in the table.

The hardness classification is as follows:

  • Hardness class 40: Hardness range IRHD 36 to 45
  • Hardness class 50: Hardness range IRHD 46 to 55
  • Hardness class 60: Hardness range IRHD 56 to 65
  • Hardness class 70: Hardness range IRHD 66 to 75
  • Hardness class 80: Hardness range IRHD 76 to 85
  • Hardness class 90: Hardness range IRHD 86 to 95

Materials must be free of any substances that may have a detrimental effect on the fluid being transported or on the pipe or fitting. Elastomeric components of composite seals that do not penetrate the pipeline's contents are not required to meet this standard. In cold and hot potable water applications, materials must not degrade water quality under the conditions of use. Materials must comply with the national requirements of the country of use.

In short, EN 681-1 is a European standard that specifies the requirements for elastomeric seals used in pipe connections in water supply, drainage, and sewerage systems. These seals play a critical role in ensuring leak-proof connections between pipeline components, particularly where flexibility and resistance to environmental factors are important.

The EN 681-1 standard specifically covers vulcanized rubber seals and specifies standards for their materials, properties, and performance. It is part of the EN 681 series of standards, which covers elastomeric seals used in a variety of applications.

This standard applies to vulcanized rubber (excluding thermoplastics) used in:

  • Drinking water pipelines
  • Wastewater (both treated and untreated) systems
  • Drainage and sewerage (both buried and above ground)
  • Rainwater and surface water systems

The purpose of this standard is to ensure that the rubber materials used in these seals are durable, chemically resistant and mechanically reliable over long periods in harsh environments.

The EN 681-1 standard classifies rubber compounds into various material types. For example,

  • WA: For use with cold drinking water (up to 50 degrees)
  • WB: For hot drinking water (up to 85 degrees)
  • WC: For cold wastewater
  • WD: For hot wastewater

This standard outlines detailed physical and chemical requirements, including:

  • Hardness (measured in Shore A)
  • Tensile strength and elongation at break
  • Compressive strength
  • Resistance to ozone, water and microbial attack
  • Volume change in water and air after aging
  • Tear resistance
  • Low temperature flexibility (typically tested at -10 degrees to -25 degrees depending on the application)

Manufacturers must conduct type testing to verify that their seals comply with the requirements. These tests evaluate:

  • Long-term material stability
  • Suitability for contact with drinking water (hygiene tests may be required depending on national regulations)
  • Resistance to environmental conditions such as heat, ozone and water immersion

Additionally, third-party certifications may be sought for products claiming to comply with the EN 681-1 standard, particularly in drinking water applications.

EN 681-1 compliant gaskets are commonly used in:

  • PVC, HDPE, ductile iron and concrete pipes
  • Manhole connections
  • Flexible couplings and fittings
  • Water treatment plants

These seals help maintain system integrity, reduce the risk of leaks, and provide some flexibility at joints, which is vital for underground installations subject to ground movement.

For civil engineers, utilities companies and pipeline contractors, specifying seals compliant with the EN 681-1 standard enables:

  • Long-term performance
  • Safety and hygiene in drinking water systems
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Compliance with EU regulations and construction standards

Consequently, the EN 681-1 standard sets the benchmark for the quality and performance of rubber seals used in water and wastewater pipeline systems. As infrastructure ages and environmental standards become more stringent, selecting compatible sealing solutions is crucial to ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of fluid handling systems.
