TS 708 Steel - For Reinforced Concrete - Reinforcement Steel Analysis

TS 708 Steel - For Reinforced Concrete - Reinforcement Steel Analysis

In the TS 708 standard published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), the requirements and definitions for the performance properties of weldable and non-weldable reinforcing steel used in reinforced concrete buildings and produced in rod, coil and straightened coil forms are explained.

TS 708 Steel - For Reinforced Concrete - Reinforcement Steel Analysis

The following types of reinforcing steels are not covered by this standard:

  • Welded fabricated mesh steel
  • Galvanized reinforcing steel
  • Epoxy coated reinforcing steel
  • Corrosion resistant reinforcing steel
  • Prestressed reinforcing steel
  • Reinforcing steel with processes such as cutting and bending
  • Surface profiled strip steels
  • Reinforcement steel produced from used rail and axle steel

It is used in bridges, buildings, skyscrapers, homes, warehouses and foundations to increase the strength of a concrete structure. Reinforcing steel, which is generally called rebar, is used in these constructions. Because steel is strong in both tensile and compression, reinforcing steel is used in concrete to provide additional strength. Steel and concrete have similar coefficients of thermal expansion, so a steel-reinforced concrete structural member experiences minimal stress as the temperature changes.

Reinforcing steel is widely used for its flexibility, strength, recyclability, compatibility with concrete and usability.

A few international standards that were taken as a basis during the preparation of the TS 708 standard are:

  • ISO 17660-1 Welding - Welding of reinforcing steel - Part 1: Load bearing welded joints
  • ISO 17660-2 Welding - Welding of reinforcing steel - Part 2: Non-load bearing welded joints
  • EN 10080 Steel for concrete reinforcement - Weldable reinforcing steel - General

For the purposes of this standard, concrete steel bar refers to a circular or circular section steel bar used in reinforced concrete buildings. Ribbed steel bar refers to steel bar on which at least two rows of continuous ribs forming a uniform shape along the bar.

The weldability of reinforcing steel is dependent on its carbon equivalent and limitations in the proportions of some elements. The highest value and carbon equivalent of each element should not exceed the values shown in the table.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for reinforcing steel used in reinforced concrete structures, within the scope of TS 708 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
