EN 10303 Thin Magnetic Steel Strip and Sheet for Use at Medium Frequencies

EN 10303 Thin Magnetic Steel Strip and Sheet for Use at Medium Frequencies

The European standard "EN 10303: Thin magnetic steel strip and sheet for use at medium frequencies" defines classes for thin non-oriented magnetic steel strip and sheet with nominal thicknesses of 0,05 mm, 0,10 mm, 0,15 mm, 0,20 mm, 0,25 mm, 0,27 mm, 0,30 mm, and 0,35 mm, and for fine-grain oriented magnetic steel strip and sheet with nominal thicknesses of 0,05 mm, 0,10 mm, 0,15 mm, and 0,18 mm. Specifically, this standard describes general requirements, magnetic properties, geometrical properties and tolerances, technological specifications, and inspection procedures.

EN 10303 Thin Magnetic Steel Strip and Sheet for Use at Medium Frequencies

This standard applies to magnetic steel strip and sheet supplied in the final annealed condition in coils and intended for the construction of magnetic circuits used at frequencies equal to or greater than 100 Hz.

For the purposes of this standard, the terms and definitions given in IEC 60050-121 and IEC 60050-221, as well as the following definitions, apply:

  • The number of twists refers to the number of alternative twists possible before the first crack in the base metal appears, which is visible to the naked eye and indicates the ductility of the material.
  • Edge slope refers to the greatest distance between the longitudinal edge of the sheet and the line connecting the two ends of the measured length of this edge.

Classes within this standard are classified according to the maximum value of specific total loss in watts per kilogram and the nominal thickness of the material:

  • For non-oriented steel, 0,05 mm, 0,10 mm, 0,15 mm, 0,20 mm, 0,25 mm, 0,27 mm, 0,30 mm and 0,35 mm respectively
  • For grain-oriented steel, 0,05 mm, 0,10 mm, 0,15 mm and 0,18 mm respectively

For the material to conform to the requirements of this standard, the buyer must include the following information in his request or order:

  • Quantity required (including any limitation on the mass of a coil)
  • Product type (strip or sheet)
  • Number of this standard (EN 10303)
  • Class description of the material conforming to this standard
  • Dimensions of strips required (including any limitations on the inner and outer diameter of a coil)
  • Necessary inspection procedure, including the nature of the relevant documents

A number of options are listed in this standard. If the buyer does not indicate a desire to apply one of these options, products must be supplied in accordance with the essential specification of this standard:

  • Existence of resources or intermediates and their optional marking
  • Compatibility of surface insulation coating
  • Residual curvature
  • Resistance of the insulation coating
  • Mechanical properties for non-oriented products

The production process and composition of the steel are left to the discretion of the producer.

The material is supplied in coils. The coil mass must be agreed upon at the time of ordering. The recommended internal diameter of the coils is approximately 400 mm, excluding unoriented strips in thicknesses of 0,20 mm, 0,25 mm, 0,27 mm, 0,30 mm, and 0,35 mm, and grain-oriented strips in thicknesses of 0,18 mm, which have a recommended internal diameter of approximately 500 mm. The strip should be of a uniform width and should be wound so that the edges overlap regularly and the side surfaces of the coil are essentially flat. The coils should be wound tightly enough to prevent collapse under their own weight. The strip may occasionally show welds or interlocks resulting from the removal of faulty areas, subject to prior agreement between the parties. The value of the additional thickness caused by welding is subject to agreement. Marking of welds or interlocks, if necessary, may be the subject of a special agreement. For coils containing repair welds or interlayers, each section of the strip should be of the same quality material. The edges of the welded sections should not be so misaligned as to interfere with further processing of the material.

According to this standard, products are delivered with coating on one or both sides, but are also available without. Other types of coating are available.

Surfaces must be smooth, clean, and free of grease and rust. Scattered defects such as scratches, blisters, and cracks are permissible if the product is within tolerances and if these defects do not impair the proper use of the supplied material. Any insulating coating on the surface of the material must be sufficiently tacky to prevent separation during heat treatment or cutting operations under the conditions specified by the supplier. If the product is to be immersed in a liquid or an additional coating or impregnation is to be applied, an agreement initiated by the buyer must be made with the supplier to ensure compatibility with the surface insulating coating.

The material must be able to be cut at any point and in any shape, ensuring precision work with the right cutting tools.

In short, EN 10303 specifies the technical delivery conditions for cold-rolled unalloyed and alloyed steel strip and sheet with magnetic properties, specifically designed for use at medium frequencies in electromagnetic applications. These materials are essential for the production of electric motors, transformers, and other electromechanical devices operating in the medium frequency range.

This standard applies to:

  • Cold rolled thin magnetic steel strips and sheets.
  • Products designed for medium frequency applications (typically 400 Hz to several kHz).
  • Steels with specified magnetic properties such as high permeability and low core losses.

This standard does not cover electrical steels with or without grain orientation for power frequencies. These are covered by EN 10106 or EN 10107.

The EN 10303 standard provides requirements regarding:

  • Magnetic properties:
    • Specific total loss
    • Relative magnetic permeability
  • Mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation
  • Dimensional tolerances for thickness and width
  • Surface quality and appearance
  • Types of coatings, including insulating coatings to prevent eddy current losses

Typical applications of steels conforming to this standard are:

  • Rotors and stators in electric motors (especially for the aerospace and automotive sectors)
  • Magnetic actuators
  • Transformers and inductive components for medium frequency converters
  • High speed machines where power loss due to eddy currents must be minimized

This standard is considered important for the following reasons:

The use of materials complying with EN 10303 is critical for:

  • Energy efficiency: These materials help reduce core losses in electrical machines, improving overall system efficiency.
  • Precision engineering: Defined tolerances and magnetic properties ensure predictable and consistent performance in dynamic electrical applications.
  • Product standardization: Facilitates international trade and production consistency by providing uniform quality criteria.
