EN IEC 60309 Plugs, Fixed or Portable Sockets and Appliance Inlets for Industrial Purposes

EN IEC 60309 Plugs, Fixed or Portable Sockets and Appliance Inlets for Industrial Purposes

The standard "EN IEC 60309 Plugs, fixed or portable socket-outlets and appliance inlets for industrial purposes", which is based on a European standard and later published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), consists of the following subsections published under the same title:

EN IEC 60309 Plugs, Fixed or Portable Sockets and Appliance Inlets for Industrial Purposes

  • The standard "EN IEC 60309-1 Part 1: General requirements" applies to fixed or portable socket-outlets and appliance inlets designed primarily for industrial use, indoors or outdoors, having a nominal operational voltage not exceeding 1 000 Volts DC or 1 000 Volts AC, a frequency not exceeding 500 Hz, and a nominal current not exceeding 800 A. These accessories are intended for installation by trained or skilled persons only. The list of preferred ratings is not intended to exclude other ratings.

This standard applies to accessories to be used where the ambient temperature is normally between -25°C and +40°C. These accessories are designed for connection to copper or copper alloy cables only.

This document applies to accessories with screwless type terminals or insulation piercing terminals with a rated current of up to 32 A for series I and 30 A for series II. The use of these accessories on construction sites and in agricultural, commercial and domestic applications is not prohibited.

This standard covers fixed socket-outlets or appliance inlets incorporated into or fixed to electrical equipment. This standard also applies to accessories intended for use in very-low-voltage installations. This standard does not apply to accessories primarily designed for domestic and similar general purposes. This standard does not cover single-pole accessories. Where special conditions apply, such as on board ships or in locations where explosions are likely to occur, additional requirements may be necessary.

  • The standard EN IEC 60309-2 Part 2: Dimensional compatibility requirements for pin and contact tube accessories” applies to plugs, fixed or portable socket-outlets and appliance sockets, primarily intended for industrial use, indoors or outdoors, with a nominal operational voltage not exceeding 1 000 Volts DC or 1 000 Volts AC, a frequency not exceeding 500 Hz and a nominal current not exceeding 125 A.

These accessories are intended to be installed by trained or qualified persons only. Any references in EN IEC 60309-1 to accessories with a nominal current exceeding 125 A are not applicable to this standard. This standard applies to accessories with pins and contact tubes in standard configurations.

This standard applies to accessories designed for use where the ambient temperature is normally between -25°C and +40°C. The use of these accessories is not prohibited on construction sites, in agricultural, commercial, and domestic applications.

This standard applies to accessories with screw-type terminals or insulation-piercing terminals with nominal currents up to 32 A for series I and 30 A for series II. Sockets or appliance inlets incorporated or fixed into electrical equipment are within the scope of this standard. This standard also applies to accessories designed for use in extra-low-voltage installations.

This standard does not apply to accessories designed primarily for residential and similar general purposes. Where special conditions apply, such as on ships or in locations where explosions are likely to occur, additional requirements may be necessary.

  • EN IEC 60309-3 Part 3: Particular requirements for plugs, socket-outlets, connectors and appliance inlets for use in explosive gas atmospheres” is valid only for plugs, socket-outlets, connectors and appliance inlets defined in IEC 309-1 and for group II devices defined in IEC 79-0. This standard does not cover their use in dust or dust. It does not cover group I devices defined in IEC 79-0. The ambient temperature range of this standard is -20 degrees Celsius to +40 degrees Celsius. The protection types used are selected from the appropriate protection types specified in IEC 79-0.

This standard was revoked in 2021.

  • The standard EN IEC 60309-4 Part 4: “Switched socket-outlets, with or without locking mechanism” applies primarily to self-contained products designed for industrial use, indoors or outdoors, which combine the following elements in a single enclosure:
    • According to IEC 60309-1 or IEC 60309-2 standards, a fixed or portable socket with a nominal operating voltage not exceeding 1000 Volts DC or 1000 Volts AC, a frequency not exceeding 500 Hz and a nominal current not exceeding 800 A.
    • A switching device.

These products may include locking or protective devices. These accessories are designed for installation by instructed or skilled personnel only.

  • The standard EN IEC 60309-5 Part 5: Dimensional compatibility and interchangeability requirements for plugs, socket-outlets, ship connectors and ship inlets for low-voltage shore connection systems (LVSC)” applies to a single type of plug, socket-outlet, ship connector and ship inlet designed to connect ships to the specific shore supply systems described in the standard IEC/IEEE 80005-3.

This standard applies to three-phase accessories with a ground contact and four pilot contacts. The maximum rated current of these accessories does not exceed 350 A and the maximum rated operational voltage does not exceed 690 Volts 50/60 Hz.

The various operating currents, voltages, and frequencies required for various ship types are determined by the shore power system described in standard IEC/IEEE 80005-3. These accessories are intended for installation and operation by trained or skilled persons only.

This standard applies to accessories intended for primary use outdoors in seawater environments where the ambient temperature is normally between -25°C and +40°C. Different ambient temperatures may apply in some countries and need to be taken into account.

These accessories are designed for connection to copper or copper alloy cables only. Sockets or shipboard inlets incorporated into or fixed to electrical equipment that is part of the shore connection system are within the scope of this standard. Additional requirements may be required where special conditions, such as the possibility of explosions, apply.

The EN IEC 60309 series of standards is considered essential because it ensures safety. Plugs and sockets that comply with these standards are designed to prevent electrical hazards, including:

  • Incorrect voltage connections
  • Unwanted connection interruptions
  • Water or dust ingress (through IP class designs)
  • Features such as keying and color coding prevent incompatible connections.
