UL 508A Industrial Control Panels Test Standard

UL 508A Industrial Control Panels Test Standard

The “UL 508A Industrial control panels” standard developed by Underwriter Laboratories (UL) describes the requirements for industrial control panels operating with a voltage of 1000 Volts or less for general industrial use.

UL 508A Industrial Control Panels Test Standard

Industrial control panels covered by this standard are designed for general purpose use in accordance with the “NFPA 70-2020 National electrical code” standard. The ambient temperature where these machines are used should be between 5-40 degrees, unless specifically determined.

These requirements also cover industrial uses such as:

  • Industrial control panel enclosures and industrial control panels intended for flame safety monitoring of combustible fuel type equipment, elevator control, crane control, service equipment use, marine use, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, and load management equipment
  • Fountain control, irrigation equipment control, and industrial machinery including metalworking machine tools, electric press controls, and plastic injection molding machines
  • For control of permanently installed electrical equipment for water playgrounds, permanently installed electrical equipment associated with commercial water park attractions, wave pools and similar installations, and permanently installed electrical equipment associated with commercial and large residential swimming pools and underground SPAs intended for industrial control panels

Industrial control panels consist of two or more power circuit components, such as motor controllers, overload relays, fused disconnect switches, and circuit breakers, or push buttons, pilot lights, selector switches, timers, and control relays, or power and control circuitry with associated wiring and terminals. It consists of assemblies consisting of control circuit components such as a combination of components. These components are mounted on or contained within an enclosure or mounted on a subpanel.

However, the UL 508A standard does not include evaluation of controlled equipment such as industrial control panels, motors, heaters, lighting and other loads connected to power circuits.

The latest update of this standard includes important technical changes. Namely,

  • “UL 60730-1 Automatic electrical controls standard - Part 1: General requirements” has been added.
  • Important information has been added to the notes column of the table for environmental type rated cable routing.
  • “UL 60320-1 Appliance connectors for household and similar general purposes - Part 1: General requirements” has been added.
  • In the table, the current short circuit currents of the three-phase transformer secondary have been revised.
  • Connectors for use in data, signal, control and power applications have been added to the table.
  • Requirements for resistors have been revised.
  • New requirements have been added for reactors.
  • The maximum voltage in the scope has been increased to 1000 Volts.
  • Dimensioning of an internal bonding conductor has been added to the table.
  • Power circuit conductors smaller than 14 AWG are added in industrial machinery panels.
  • Conduit hubs mounted in enclosures with factory-supplied openings, cover plates, and enclosures intended for use with other equipment space have been added.
  • Grounding and bonding meshes will be listed and sized.
  • Requirements for panels with LED fixtures have been added for panel maintenance lighting.
  • Exceptions are made for connecting equipment on the supply side of disconnect means for industrial machinery panels.
  • Air exhaust from the forced ventilation system in the area occupied by the operator has been added.
  • Cable-connected outdoor rating panels have been revised.
  • Short circuit requirements have been added for secondary components of the limited power supply.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the "UL 508A Industrial control panels" standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
