EN 598 Ductile Iron Pipes, Fittings, Accessories and Their Connections for Sewerage Applications
A European standard, “EN 598 Ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and their joints for sewerage applications - Requirements and test methods”, describes the requirements and related test methods applicable to ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and their joints for the following systems for the construction of drainage and sewerage outside buildings:

- Systems operating without pressure (gravity sewer) or with positive or negative pressure
- Systems to be installed underground or above ground
- Systems used to convey surface water, domestic wastewater and certain types of industrial waste in separate systems or combined systems
This standard applies to pipes, fittings and accessories with the following characteristics:
- Manufactured with socketed, flanged or tapped ends
- Normally delivered with external and internal coating
- According to EN 476 standard, suitable for continuous liquid temperatures between 0 degrees excluding frost and 45 degrees for a nominal size of up to 200 or 35 degrees for a nominal size of less than 200
- Not intended for use in areas subject to reaction to fire regulations.
This does not preclude special regulations for products to be used at higher temperatures. This standard covers pipes, fittings and accessories, and associated connections cast by all casting processes or manufactured by the manufacture of cast components, from nominal sizes 80 to 2000 inclusive.
This standard specifies requirements for materials, dimensions and tolerances, mechanical properties, and standard coatings for ductile iron pipes and fittings. It also provides performance requirements for all components, including connections. Joint design and gasket shapes are outside the scope of this standard.
In this standard, the technical requirements are described as follows:
- Ductile iron pipes and fittings: Nominal dimensions, thicknesses, lengths and coatings are specified in this standard. When pipes, fittings and other fittings with different wall thicknesses, lengths and coatings are supplied by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser, with reference to this standard, they shall comply with all other requirements of this standard.
- The standard nominal dimensions of pipes and fittings are given in this standard. These nominal dimension values are in accordance with EN 476. The functional properties of ductile iron pipes and fittings must be as given in this standard. When installed and operated under the designed conditions, ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories, and their assemblies maintain all their functional properties throughout their reasonable economic operating life due to their constant material properties, cross-sectional stability, and high safety factor design.
- Pipes, fittings, and accessories must be free from defects and surface imperfections that would lead to non-compliance with this standard. If necessary, pipes and fittings may be repaired, for example, by welding, to eliminate surface imperfections and localized defects that do not affect the entire wall thickness. However, repairs must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's written procedure, and the repaired pipes and fittings must comply with all the requirements of this standard.
- Rubber gasket materials must comply with the requirements of standard EN 681-1. Where materials other than rubber are required (e.g., for high-temperature flange connections), they must comply with the relevant European or international standard.
- Flanged connections must be designed for connection to flanges whose dimensions and tolerances comply with EN 1092-2. Bolts and nuts must comply with at least the requirements of EN ISO 4016 and EN ISO 4034. Washers, if required, must comply with EN ISO 7091. Although this does not affect the connection, the manufacturer must make available information on whether their products are normally delivered with fixed or adjustable flanges. Flange gaskets may be of any type specified in EN 1514.
- Pipes and fittings with flexible connections must comply with this standard for tap outside diameters and tolerances. This allows for connections between components equipped with different types of flexible connections. Furthermore, each type of flexible connection must be designed to meet the performance requirements of this standard.
- Sewer and drain pipes should be externally identified with one of the following colors: brown, red, or gray. This is to ensure easy identification of installed sewers and drains. Pipes specifically designed for rainwater or surface water sewers (separate systems) may be identified with a different color than those used for drinking water pipes.
In short, the EN 598 standard defines the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties that ensure pipes and fittings will perform safely under the expected loads and conditions. By creating a common set of criteria across Europe, this standard makes products interchangeable and compatible, simplifying design, construction, and maintenance.
