EN 13547 Industrial Valves - Copper Alloy Ball Valves

EN 13547 Industrial Valves - Copper Alloy Ball Valves

The European standard "EN 13547 Industrial valves - Copper alloy ball valves" applies to general-purpose copper alloy ball valves with flanged, threaded, capillary, or compression or loose nut/union body ends. This standard does not apply to copper alloy ball valves for potable water applications.

EN 13547 Industrial Valves - Copper Alloy Ball Valves

This standard describes design and performance requirements, including materials, pressure/temperature ratings for casings and casing housings, dimensions, test procedures, and marking.

In some specific applications, such as gas, valves complying with this standard can be used provided the requirements of the relevant performance standards are met. However, approval from the relevant regulatory authority may be required.

According to this standard, the nominal size range is DN 6 to DN 300 and the nominal diameter range is 6 mm to 110 mm.

The range of pressure designations covered is PN 6, PN 10, PN 16, PN 20, PN 25, PN 32, PN 40, PN 63 for Class 150 and Class 300. The classification requirements section of this standard applies to the applicability of each nominal size/diameter and each pressure designation to different valve end types.

The nominal dimensions applicable to each body end type shall be as specified in the tables provided within the standard. DN applies to flanged valves (designated as PN), and NPS applies to flanged valves (designated as Class). Threaded valves are normally defined by the thread size. Capillary and compression end valves are normally defined by the nominal diameter, expressed as the nominal outside diameter of the connecting pipe or tube. The use of DN is possible for valves with non-flanged body ends. DN 6 and DN 8 are not listed in EN ISO 6708, but are commonly used equivalent nominal sizes for valves with 1/8 and 1/4 threaded ends, respectively. The relationship between the nominal size, DN, and body end type shall be as given in the table entitled "Relationship between nominal size, DN, and body end types."

The PN and Class designations applicable to valves with flanged or threaded body ends shall be as specified in the table entitled “PN and Class range - Flanged and threaded ends”. PN 20 and PN 32 are the PN designations specified for copper alloy valves with threaded ends and are in addition to the list of PN designations given in EN 1333. Capillary or pressure-end valves are not defined by PN or Class. EN 1254-1, EN 1254-2, EN 1254-3 and EN 1254-5, which provide details of body ends for capillary and pressure-end valves in this standard, do not use the PN designation system given in EN 1333. If PN designations are assigned to capillary or pressure-end valves, it is the manufacturer's responsibility to provide information about any pressure and/or temperature limitations in service.

Two series of valves are specified:

  • Series A: For flanged and threaded end valves
  • Series B: For flanged, threaded, capillary, compression and loose nut/union end valves

Series A valves have body components manufactured from the limited copper-aluminum and copper-tin alloys specified in EN 1092-3 and EN 1759-3, and comply with the pressure/temperature ratings specified in these two flange standards. Additional copper-aluminum and copper-tin alloys are listed in the table for Series A valves, and the pressure/temperature ratings for valves manufactured from these materials are the same as those given in EN 1092-3 and EN 1759-3.

Series B valves have body components manufactured from copper-zinc-lead or complex copper-zinc alloys and have lower allowable pressures at elevated temperatures than Series A valves.

Valves must be properly designed, including appropriate safety margins and considering all relevant operating factors, to ensure their safety throughout their intended service life. Construction details are the responsibility of the manufacturer. Valves must be full bore or reduced bore. The body may be of one-piece or multi-piece construction.

The EN 13547 standard is particularly important because it sets out the technical specifications and requirements for rolled copper sheets, strips, plates, and flats used in various applications in the construction and engineering sectors. The main reasons for this importance are:

  • Material quality assurance: Ensures copper products meet the requirements for consistent mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, and surface finish that are critical for reliable performance in production and end use.
  • Harmonization across Europe: As a European standard, it provides a harmonized framework across European Union countries, simplifying trade and ensuring compatibility and standardization in construction and industrial projects.
  • Safety and performance: Correctly specified copper sheets and plates contribute to safe and durable products, particularly in roofing, cladding and industrial equipment where mechanical strength and corrosion resistance are vital.
  • Support for product certification: The EN 13547 standard forms the basis for CE marking under the European Union construction products directive where applicable, and is essential for legal market access within the European Union.
  • Manufacturing guidance: This standard helps manufacturers control their processes, reduce waste, and ensure consistent quality, increasing efficiency and customer satisfaction.

As a result, the EN 13547 standard is essential to ensure that copper rolled products are safe, reliable and of high quality, supporting both regulatory compliance and cross-industry technical performance.
