The ISO 8528-1 standard defines various classifications for the application, rating and performance of generator sets consisting of a reciprocating internal combustion engine, alternating current (AC) generator and associated control gear, switchgear and auxiliary equipment. This standard applies to AC generator sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion engine engines for land and marine use, excluding generator sets used in aircraft or for propelling land vehicles and locomotives.

For some special applications (e.g., basic hospital supplies, high-rise buildings) additional requirements may be required. The provisions of this standard may be the basis for determining any additional requirements. For other types of reciprocating prime movers (e.g., sewage gas engines, steam engines), the provisions of this standard may be used as the basis for determining these requirements. Generator sets meeting the requirements of this standard are used to produce electric power for continuous, peak-load, and standby applications. The classifications set forth in this standard are intended to aid in understanding between the manufacturer and the customer.

The ISO 8528-2 standard describes the basic characteristics of reciprocating internal combustion engines when used for alternating current (AC) generator set applications . This standard applies to reciprocating internal combustion engines for AC generator sets for land and marine use, excluding generator sets used in aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. Terms defining the speed management and speed characteristics of reciprocating internal combustion engines are listed and explained, particularly where they apply to the engine's use to drive AC generators. For other types of reciprocating primary actuators (e.g., steam engines), the provisions of this standard may be used as the basis for specifying these requirements.

ISO 8528-3 describes the essential characteristics of alternating current (AC) generators under the control of voltage regulators when used for generating set applications. This standard complements the requirements of IEC 34-1. There is currently no international standard for asynchronous generators. When such a standard is published, ISO 8528-3 will be revised accordingly. This standard applies to AC generators driven by reciprocating internal combustion engines for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used in aircraft or for propelling land vehicles and locomotives. Additional requirements may be required for some special applications (e.g. basic hospital supplies, high-rise buildings). Other types of alternating-drive generator sets for AC (e.g. sewage gas engines, steam engines) shall be based on this standard.

ISO 8528-4 specifies criteria for control gear and switchgear for generator sets with alternative internal combustion engines. It applies to AC generator sets for land and marine use, excluding generator sets used in aircraft or for propelling land vehicles and locomotives. For generator sets driven by other primary propulsion units (e.g. steam engines), this standard should be considered as a basis for determining these requirements.

The ISO 8528-5 standard specifies the design and performance criteria resulting from the combination of an AC generator and an alternating current reciprocating internal combustion engine when operating as a unit. This unit may or may not operate in parallel with the grid. This standard applies to AC generator sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion engines for land and marine use, excluding generator sets used in aircraft or for propelling land vehicles and locomotives. For generator sets driven by other types of alternative motive power (e.g. steam engines), the provisions of this document may be used as a basis for specifying these requirements.

ISO 8528-6 specifies test methods to be used to characterize a complete generator set. It is applicable to AC generator sets for land and marine use, excluding generator sets used in aircraft or for propelling land vehicles and locomotives. This standard also provides simulation methods as an alternative method to assess the capability of a generator set to meet the requirements defined in ISO 8528-5. For AC generator sets driven by other alternative types of motive power (e.g. steam engines), this standard is intended as a basis for determining these requirements.

ISO 8528-7 specifies the requirements and parameters for the characteristics and design of reciprocating internal combustion engine driven generator sets, with reference to the definitions given in ISO 8528-1 to ISO 8528-6. This standard applies to AC generator sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion engines for land and marine use, excluding generator sets used in aircraft or for propelling land vehicles and locomotives. For other alternative types of motive power (e.g. sewage gas engines, steam engines), the provisions of this standard are intended to serve as a basis.

The ISO 8528-8 standard specifies the design requirements, minimum performances and type tests for low-power generator sets driven by alternating internal combustion engines for land and marine use (domestic, recreational and industrial applications), excluding generator sets used in aircraft. This standard mainly covers low-power generator sets driven by alternating internal combustion engines to produce single or polyphase alternating current or direct current up to 500 Volts. Generator sets are standard-production sets. In this standard, low power means a nominal power of a magnitude of approximately 10 kW/50 Hz, up to 12 kW/60 Hz.

For the purpose of this standard, low power generating sets have the following characteristics:

  • Users are generally amateurs
  • The entire generator set is usually portable or mobile
  • Electrical outlet is connected via plugs, sockets and screw terminals except for extra low voltages
  • The generator set is ready for use without any additional installation work by the user.

Generator sets with higher nominal power or special applications that comply with these specifications may be tested in accordance with this standard by agreement between the manufacturer and the customer. If additional requirements are required for specific applications, they should be made on the basis of this standard.

ISO 8528-9 describes a procedure for measuring and evaluating the external mechanical vibration response of generating sets at specified measurement points. This standard applies to reciprocating internal combustion engine driven AC generating sets for fixed and mobile installations with rigid or flexible mountings. It is valid for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used in aircraft or generating sets used to propel land vehicles and locomotives. For generating sets driven by other alternative types of motive power (e.g. sewage gas engines, steam engines), the provisions of this standard are intended to be accepted as a basis for such applications.

The ISO 8528-10 standard describes noise test codes for determining the sound power level and emission sound pressure level at the workstation of alternating internal combustion engine driven electric power generating sets. This standard is applicable to fixed and variable speed alternating internal combustion engine driven AC and DC generating sets for stationary and mobile applications. It is applicable for land and marine use, except generating sets used in aircraft or for propelling land vehicles and locomotives.

IEC 88528-11 specifies criteria, including performance and test methods, for rotary uninterruptible power systems resulting from a combination of mechanical and electrical rotating machines. This standard applies to power supplies primarily designed to provide uninterruptible AC power to the consumer. When operated without an input mains supply, power is provided by stored energy or a reciprocating internal combustion engine and the output power is provided by one or more rotating electrical machines. This standard applies to AC power supplies primarily designed to provide uninterruptible electric power for stationary land and marine use, excluding supplies for aircraft, road vehicles or locomotives. It also excludes power supplies in which the output power is generated by static converters.

The ISO 8528-12 standard specifies requirements for generator sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion engines for security services as an emergency power source. This standard applies, for example, to security equipment in hospitals, high-rise buildings and public assembly areas. This standard contains specific requirements for the performance, design and maintenance of generator sets used in these aforementioned applications.

ISO 8528-13 specifies the safety requirements for reciprocating internal combustion engine driven generator sets up to 1000 Volts, comprising a reciprocating internal combustion engine, an AC generator and additional equipment required for operation (e.g. control gear, switchgear, auxiliary equipment). This standard applies to generator sets for land and marine use (domestic, recreational and industrial applications). It does not apply to generator sets used in marine vessels and mobile offshore units, or for aircraft or for propelling land vehicles and locomotives. This standard deals with the specific requirements for testing and safety design that must be complied with in addition to the definitions and requirements in ISO 8528-1 to ISO 8528-6, where applicable. It specifies the safety requirements to protect the user from hazard.
