Seasonal Productivity Test

Seasonal Productivity Test

Seasonal efficiency is a way of measuring the true energy efficiency of heating and cooling technology over the course of a whole year. This new measure provides a more realistic indicator of a system's energy efficiency and environmental impact. This method of rating energy efficiency is guided by the European Union's energy-related products (ErP) directive (eco-design directive for short), which sets the minimum eco-design requirements that manufacturers must integrate into their energy-using products.

Seasonal Productivity Test

Seasonal efficiency requires a new rating system for heating and cooling products that must be used by all manufacturers. These systems are:

  • Seasonal energy efficiency ratio value in cooling
  • Seasonal coefficient of performance in heating

The new seasonal ratings reflect the actual energy consumption of a heat pump based on its energy efficiency over a year. The two values mentioned above measure annual energy consumption and efficiency in typical daily use. Here, temperature fluctuations and waiting times are taken into account to give a clear and reliable indication of typical energy efficiency over the long term, throughout the entire heating or cooling season.

The efficiency of air conditioners is usually rated by the seasonal energy efficiency ratio. This rating is calculated by dividing the total number of BTUs of heat taken from the air by the total amount of energy the air conditioner needs in watt-hours. The higher this ratio, the more energy efficient the air conditioner will be. Based on power, this ratio relates the cooling power of the air conditioner to the electrical power consumption. The seasonal energy efficiency ratio is very similar to the seasonal coefficient of performance value commonly used in thermodynamics. In theory, an energy efficiency ratio of 13 equals a coefficient of performance value of 3.8.

There are four heat pump performance measures in practice: coefficient of performance, energy efficiency ratio, seasonal energy efficiency ratio and heating seasonal performance factor.

The coefficient of performance is the ratio of the output power to the input power. The energy efficiency ratio is the ratio of output cooling energy (in BTU) to electrical input energy (in watt-hours). Seasonal energy efficiency ratio value is the ratio of output cooling energy (in BTU) to electrical input energy (in watt-hours). This value is a measurement of how the system behaves during a season when the outside temperature fluctuates.
