EN ISO 9261 Agricultural Irrigation Equipment - Emitters and Emitter Tubes - Specification and Test Methods

The standard "EN ISO 9261 Agricultural irrigation equipment - Emitters and emitter pipes - Specification and test methods", which is based on a European standard and later published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes the mechanical and functional requirements for agricultural irrigation emitters and emitter pipes and fittings, if any, and provides methods for testing compliance with these requirements. This standard also includes data that must be provided by the manufacturer to ensure correct information, installation and operation in the field.

EN ISO 9261 Agricultural Irrigation Equipment - Emitters and Emitter Tubes - Specification and Test Methods

This standard applies to emitters, emitter and dripper (drip) tubes, hoses, collapsible hoses (tapes) and tubes of which emitter units form an integral part, emitters and emitter units, with or without pressure regulation and with flow rates not exceeding 24 l/h per outlet (except during cleaning) and fittings dedicated to the connection of emitter tubes, hoses and tubes. Porous tubes (tubes that are porous throughout their entire length) are outside the scope of this standard and do not cover the performance of tubes with respect to blockage.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • Emitter means a dripper device installed on the irrigation lateral and designed to discharge water in drops or continuous flow, excluding washing, at flow rates not exceeding 24 l/h.
  • In-line emitter refers to an emitter designed to be placed between two lengths of pipe in the irrigation lateral.
  • An online emitter is an emitter designed to be mounted on the wall of an irrigation lateral, either directly or indirectly via means such as piping.
  • A multiple output emitter is an emitter in which the output stream is split and directed to several distinctly different locations.
  • A multiple emitter is a multiple outlet emitter in which each outlet is a secondary emitter with its own flow rate. The pressure relationship and flow rate of each outlet are generally independent of the flow rates of the other emitters.
  • The emitter pipe is a continuous pipe, hose or tubing, including a perforated or other hydraulic device (tape) attached to the pipe, hose or tubing during production and designed to discharge water in drops or in a continuous stream, at flow rates not exceeding 24 l/h, excluding flushing.
  • The regulated emitter/emitter tube is a pressure compensating emitter/emitter tube that maintains a relatively constant flow rate under varying water pressures at the tube inlet within the limits specified by the manufacturer.
  • A regular emitter/emitter tube is a tube whose flow rate is non-zero when the inlet pressure is non-zero.
  • A leak-proof emitter/emitter tube is an emitter/emitter tube whose flow is zero when the inlet pressure is zero. This is lower than a value (non-zero) declared by the pipe manufacturer.
  • An unregulated emitter/emitter tube is a non-pressure compensated emitter/emitter tube. This is a tube whose flow rate varies according to the inlet water pressure.
  • Flow rate refers to the emission rate of an emitter or emitter tube.
  • Minimum working pressure is the lowest working pressure at the inlet of the pipe recommended by the manufacturer to ensure proper operation of the emitter or emitter pipe.
  • Maximum working pressure is the highest water pressure at the inlet of the pipe recommended by the manufacturer to ensure proper operation of the emitter or emitter pipe.
  • Non-reusable emission pipe is pipe that is not designed to be removed and reinstalled in the field.

Emitters and emitter tubes are classified according to the following criteria:

  • According to reusability (duration of use):
    • Non-reusable emitter tubes
    • Reusable emitter tubes
  • By type of pressure regulation (by operation)
    • Unregulated emitters / emitter tubes
    • Regulated emitters / emitter tubes
  • According to the type of operation at low pressure:
    • Regular
    • Tight
  • According to the emitter connection type to the pipe:
    • Online emitter
    • In-line emitter
    • Built into or integrated in the pipe (emitter pipe)
  • According to the multi-output emitter type:
    • Multi emitter
    • Regular multiple output emitter

Emitters/emitter tubes and fittings must be free from any manufacturing defects that could negatively affect performance. The construction of the emitters/emitter tubes and fittings must allow for easy connection, with or without clamping tapes, whether the connection is made manually or with suitable tools provided by the manufacturer.

In terms of emitter pipe dimensions, the manufacturer shall specify the outer diameter, inner diameter and wall thickness of the product in millimeters, and the actual dimensions of the product shall comply with the values declared by the manufacturer in accordance with this standard. The dimensions of the connecting parts shall match the dimensions of the emitter pipe to ensure easy and reliable connection.

The materials used in the manufacture of emitters/emitter tubes and fittings must be resistant to fertilizers and other chemicals commonly used in agricultural irrigation and must be suitable for use with water at temperatures up to 60 degrees and operating pressures specified by the manufacturer. The materials should not support the growth of algae and bacteria as much as possible. Parts exposed to light must be opaque and protected against UV degradation.

The manufacturer must be able to supply fittings of appropriate size and shape for each type and size of emitter tube to make secure connections to the emitter tube. The joint, with or without clamping bands, must be strong enough to withstand all operating pressures. Compression components such as bands and screws must be made of non-wearing materials or materials that are resistant to wear.
