EN IEC 60502 Extruded Insulated Power Cables and Accessories for Rated Voltages from 1 kV to 30 kV

EN IEC 60502 Extruded Insulated Power Cables and Accessories for Rated Voltages from 1 kV to 30 kV

The standard “EN IEC 60502 Power cables and accessories with extruded insulation for nominal voltages between 1 kV (Um = 1,2 kV) and 30 kV (Um = 36 kV)”, which is based on a European standard and subsequently published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), consists of the following subsections published under the same title:

EN IEC 60502 Extruded Insulated Power Cables and Accessories for Rated Voltages from 1 kV to 30 kV

  • The standard “EN IEC 60502-1 Part 1: Cables for rated voltages of 1 kV (Um = 1,2 kV) and 3 kV (Um = 3,6 kV)” describes the construction, dimensions and test requirements for extruded solid-insulated power cables for rated AC voltages of 1 kV (Um = 1,2 kV) and 3 kV (Um = 3,6 kV) for fixed installations such as distribution networks or industrial plants. Cables with a rated AC voltage of 1 kV (Um = 1,2 kV) designed and tested in accordance with this standard may also be used in DC distribution systems having a rated voltage of at least 750 Volts DC (maximum 900 Volts DC) between a live conductor and neutral/earth or at least 1500 Volts DC (maximum 1800 Volts DC) between two live conductors, if declared by the manufacturer. For DC systems, the applicable core identification is taken into account in accordance with local installation regulations.

Recommendations for preferred core colors for line conductors in DC systems are given in the IEC 60445 standard. However, local installation regulations for DC systems may already include specific identification requirements. This standard covers cables that exhibit reduced flame spread, low smoke emission levels, and halogen-free gas emissions when exposed to fire. Cables for special installation and service conditions are not included, such as those for overhead networks, the mining industry, nuclear power plants (in and around the containment area), submarine use or onboard ship applications, or cables directly connected to photovoltaic systems. Cables for photovoltaic systems are covered by the IEC 62930 standard.

  • The standard "EN IEC 60502-2 Part 2: Cables with rated voltages from 6 kV (Um = 7,2 kV) to 30 kV (Um = 36 kV)" describes the construction, dimensions and testing requirements for power cables with extruded solid insulation from 6 kV to 30 kV for fixed installations such as distribution networks or industrial plants. When determining applications, it is recommended that the potential risk of radial water ingress be taken into account. Cable designs with barriers claimed to prevent longitudinal water penetration and an associated test are included in the scope of this standard. However, cables for special installation and service conditions are outside the scope of this standard, for example, cables for overhead networks, the mining industry, nuclear power plants (in and around the containment area) or for submarine use or onboard ship application.
  • The standard "EN IEC 60502-4 Part 4: Test requirements for accessories for cables with rated voltages between 6 kV (Um = 7,2 kV) and 30 kV (Um = 36 kV)" describes the construction, dimensions and test requirements for power cables with extruded solid insulation from 6 kV to 30 kV for fixed installations such as distribution networks or industrial plants.

In general, the basic requirements of the EN IEC 60502 standard are as follows:

  • Cable structure:
    • Conductors: Usually copper or aluminum.
    • Insulation: Extruded materials such as XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene).
    • Shielding: Metallic screens or concentric conductors for MV cables.
    • Outer Sheath: Usually PVC, PE or halogen-free compounds.
  • Performance criteria:
    • Electrical properties (dielectric strength, insulation resistance).
    • Mechanical performance (tensile strength, elongation).
    • Thermal resistance and temperature limits.
    • Fire resistance, flame spread and smoke emission (especially in public areas).
  • Type tests and routine tests:
    • High voltage withstand tests.
    • Conductor resistance and dimensional checks.
    • Thermal and cold impact tests.
    • Insulation thickness and integrity.

The EN IEC 60502 series of standards is important for several critical reasons, particularly in the fields of electrical engineering, infrastructure development, and energy distribution. The primary reasons for this importance are:

  • Ensures electrical safety: These standards define strict requirements for the insulation, construction, and performance of power cables. This ensures that the cables operate safely under the expected voltages and loads without risking:
    • Short circuits
    • Electric shock
    • fire hazards
  • Supports reliable power distribution: By specifying quality requirements for medium voltage and low voltage cables, the standard ensures:
    • Stable and uninterruptible power supply
    • Resistance to environmental stresses (humidity, heat, chemicals)
    • Long operating life with minimum maintenance
  • Promotes international compatibility: These standards are used globally, meaning manufacturers, engineers, and utilities in different countries can:
    • Designing and sourcing compatible components
    • Preventing technical incompatibilities in international projects
    • Simplifying procurement and logistics
  • Standardizes testing and quality control: These standards include detailed type testing, routine testing, and sample testing, such as:
    • Dielectric strength
    • Conductor resistance
    • Fire and flame resistance

This ensures that all cables meet minimum quality and performance criteria, reducing the risk of failure.

  • Increases infrastructure durability: Compliance with these standards ensures that cables can withstand operational stress, thermal cycles, and mechanical impacts, making systems more durable and efficient. Especially in critical sectors such as:
    • Power grids
    • Industrial plants
    • Renewable energy systems
  • Encourages innovation with security: These standards do not constrain technological advancements. Instead, they provide a framework for:
    • Using newer insulation materials
    • Improving fire safety with low-smoke, halogen-free compounds
    • Developing more compact and flexible cable designs

Ultimately, the EN IEC 60502 set of standards is crucial because it ensures safe, efficient, and globally compatible power cable systems. It facilitates innovation and international trade while protecting infrastructure, people, and investments. Without such a standard, the risks of electrical faults, non-compliance, and security incidents increase significantly.
