16 CFR Part 1631 Standard for Surface Flammability of Small Carpets and Rugs (FF 2-70)

The 16 CFR Part 1631 standard includes a test method for determining the surface flammability of small carpets and rugs when exposed to a standard minor ignition source under carefully defined draftproof conditions. This standard is applicable to all types of small carpets and rugs used as floor coverings, regardless of their method of manufacture or whether they are made of natural or synthetic fibers or films, or combinations thereof or substitutes thereof.

16 CFR Part 1631 Standard for Surface Flammability of Small Carpets and Rugs (FF 2-70)

For the purposes of this standard, the term rug means any finished product made, in whole or in part, of fabric or related material, and intended for or reasonably expected to be used as floor covering in homes, offices or other places subject to traffic. However, products that are fixed to the floor by mechanical means such as nails, fasteners, hooks, staples, adhesives are excluded from the concept of small carpet. By the way, products that are smaller than these dimensions, such as carpet squares, but which are intended to be larger than these dimensions after assembly, are excluded from this definition.

Mats, natural or synthetic fiber leathers and other similar products are included in this definition if they are within the defined dimensions, but flexible flooring such as linoleum, asphalt tile and vinyl tile are excluded from this standard.

Small kilim is synonymous with small rug for the purposes of this standard.

In the test method presented in this standard, each of eight conditioned, samples of a small carpet or rug is exposed to a standard ignition source in a draft protected environment and the proximity of the charred portion in the prescribed frame to the edge of the hole is measured.

A specimen is considered to have passed the test if the charred portion does not extend beyond 2,54 cm of the edge of the hole in the frame at any point. At least seven of the eight samples must meet the test criteria to comply with this standard.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides test services for the surface flammability of small carpets and rugs within the scope of 16 CFR Section 1631 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
