EN IEC 60335-2-89 Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-89: Particular Requirements for Commercial Refrigerating Appliances and Ice Machines Having an Integral or Remote Refrigerating Unit or Motor Compressor
The standard “EN IEC 60335-2-89 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-89: Particular requirements for commercial refrigerating appliances and ice machines with an integral or remote refrigerating unit or motor-compressor”, which has its basis in a European standard and was later published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), describes the safety requirements for electrically operated commercial refrigerating appliances and ice machines with an integral motor-compressor or supplied as two units for installation as a single appliance in accordance with the instructions.

Examples of devices covered by this standard include:
- Refrigerated display and storage cabinets
- Refrigerated service cabinets
- Service counters and self-service counters
- Blast chillers and blast freezers
- Commercial ice machines
To the extent applicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by such appliances, including flammable refrigerants and appliances using R-744 refrigerant. This standard does not apply to appliances having a flammable refrigerant mass exceeding the specified limits or to appliances using refrigerants having a toxicity classification B in accordance with ISO 817. It also does not cover the construction and operating characteristics of refrigerating appliances covered in ISO standards.
When complying with this standard, the following points should be taken into consideration:
- Additional requirements may be required for devices designed for use in vehicles or on ships or aircraft.
- In many countries, additional requirements are specified by national health authorities, national labour protection authorities, national water supply authorities and similar authorities.
This standard does not apply to the following types of devices or systems:
- Devices using flammable refrigerants in transcritical cooling systems.
- Household cooling appliances (IEC 60335-2-24)
- Split systems with a flammable refrigerant load exceeding 150 g in any one refrigeration circuit
- Industrial cooling systems
- Motorised compressors (IEC 60335-2-34)
- Commercial dispensers and vending machines (IEC 60335-2-75)
- Commercial freezing devices
- Cold rooms
- Multiple cooling chambers with remote motorized compressors
For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:
- Replacement refers to the operation of the device under normal operating conditions and under the following conditions. Devices are operated at the specified ambient temperature, empty, with doors or covers closed, shutters closed or open (whichever is more unfavourable). User-adjustable temperature control devices are short-circuited or otherwise rendered inoperable. Devices switched by dew point controls or clocks are turned on or off, whichever is more unfavourable. In devices connected to the water supply, the water other than the cooling water is at a temperature of 15 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees. The cooling water is at the maximum temperature specified in the instructions.
- Design pressure refers to the gauge pressure assigned to the high pressure side of the transcritical refrigeration system. The assigned design pressure must take into account the pressures that can be expected during transport of the transcritical refrigeration system.
- Refrigerant charge is the mass of refrigerant in the refrigeration circuit.
- A refrigerated display and storage cabinet is a cabinet that displays or stores beverages or chilled or frozen foods and is cooled by a refrigeration unit.
- An ice machine is a device that produces ice by freezing water using an electrical energy-consuming device. The device may be equipped with a compartment for storing ice.
- The auxiliary heating element is a heating device that performs an auxiliary function, such as a defrost heater, door heater or anti-condensation heater.
- A gas cooler refers to a heat exchanger in which the refrigerant, after compression, is cooled by transferring heat to an external cooling medium, without changing its state. A gas cooler is normally used in transcritical refrigeration systems.
- The refrigeration circuit is a collection of interconnected refrigerant-containing parts that form a single closed circuit through which the refrigerant is circulated to remove and transfer heat.
- The refrigeration unit consists of a factory-assembled unit to perform a portion of the refrigeration cycle (gas compression, condensation or gas cooling), one or more refrigeration compressors with motors, condensers or gas coolers, liquid receivers, interconnecting piping and auxiliary equipment, all mounted on a common base.
- Transcritical refrigeration system is a refrigeration system in which the pressure on the high pressure side is above the pressure at which the vapor and liquid states of the refrigerant can coexist in thermodynamic equilibrium.
- A hermetically sealed system is one in which all refrigerant-containing parts are sealed by welding, soldering or a similar permanent connection.
- The critical point is the point in the refrigeration circuit where flammable refrigerant can leak.
