The European standard "EN 249 Sanitary appliances - Shower trays made of cross-linked cast acrylic sheets - Requirements and test methods" specifies the requirements for domestic shower trays made of cross-linked cast acrylic sheets in accordance with the standard "EN 263 Sanitary appliances - Cross-linked cast acrylic sheets for bathtubs and shower trays for domestic purposes" and aims to ensure that the product will perform satisfactorily in use when installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. This standard is valid for all shower tray sizes and shapes.

EN 249 Sanitary Appliances - Shower Trays Made from Cross-Linked Cast Acrylic Sheets - Requirements and Test Methods

For the purposes of this standard, domestic purposes means use in homes, hotels, student accommodation, hospitals and similar buildings, except where special medical precautions are required.

The manufacturer must provide installation and maintenance instructions with each shower tray. The shower tray must be free from any sharp edges that may appear after the shower tray has been installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

In addition, the requirements in this standard are explained as follows:

  • Material: The shower tray must be manufactured from cross-linked cast acrylic sheet in accordance with EN 263 standard.
  • Surface appearance: When the shower tray is visually inspected under strong, oblique lighting, there should be no evidence of unexpected discolouration and similar cracks, chips or other surface defects that would impair the appearance or performance of the shower tray.
  • Waste outlet: The shower tray must have at least one outlet. The dimensions of the waste outlet and the space around the waste outlet must comply with the requirements of EN 251 or the manufacturer must provide or recommend a suitable waste outlet connection.
  • Overflow hole: If the shower tray is equipped with an overflow hole, the dimensions of the overflow hole and the space around the overflow hole must comply with the requirements of EN 251 or the manufacturer must provide or recommend a suitable overflow fitting.
  • Hole edges: The edges of any holes in the shower tray should be free of nicks, cracks or any other defects that could impair the appearance or performance of the shower tray.
  • Dimensional deviations: The dimensions of shower trays must not deviate more than plus/minus 5 mm from the dimension specified by the manufacturer. If the manufacturer specifies two dimensions (e.g. both the working dimension and the nominal dimension), it must indicate to which dimension the permissible deviations apply. For round shower trays, the length and width correspond to the diameter.
  • Geometrical deviations: In general, straight edges of shower trays that can support independent surrounds or supporting structures shall comply with the requirements of this standard and all shower trays shall comply with these requirements. These requirements do not apply to edges or edges specifically designed to be curved or inclined. When tested in accordance with this standard, the deviation from squareness shall be less than or equal to 5 mm. The deviation from the straightness of the rim edges shall be less than or equal to 5 mm. The deviation from the straightness of the lower rim shall be less than or equal to 5 mm. The deviation from the straightness of the upper surface of the rim shall be less than or equal to 5 mm.
  • Bottom of shower tray: If the shower tray has been installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the waste outlet is open, all water should drain from the shower tray unless blocked by surface tension.
  • Resistance to temperature changes: When tested in accordance with this standard, the shower tray shall show no evidence of deterioration or other defect that would impair the appearance or function of the shower tray and any deflection shall be less than or equal to 4 mm.
  • Impact resistance: When tested in accordance with this standard, the base and rim of the shower tray shall show no evidence of distortion or other defects that would impair the appearance or function of the shower tray.
  • Permissible deviations: When tested in accordance with this standard, the deviations shall be less than or equal to the values specified in the table given in this standard.
  • Edge: When the shower tray is installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, the edge must not encourage water to flow out of the shower tray. Roll top edges and edges with special features are not subject to this requirement.
  • The following information must be clearly written on the underside of each shower tray: the reference to this European standard (EN 249) and the name or trademark of the manufacturer or supplier.

The annex to this standard describes the following test methods (Annex A):

  • Geometric deviations test
  • Temperature change resistance test
  • Determination of deviations
  • Impact resistance test

It is recommended that these tests be performed in the order specified above.
