ASTM D1230-17 Standard Test Method for Flammability of Clothing Textiles

ASTM D1230-17 Standard Test Method for Flammability of Clothing Textiles

Developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the ASTM D1230-17 standard includes a test method for evaluating the flammability of textile fabrics for apparel other than children's pajamas or protective clothing. With this test method, the reaction of materials, products or assemblies to heat and flame is determined under controlled conditions. However, this standard alone does not cover all the factors necessary for the risk assessment of materials, products or assemblies under fire hazard or actual fire conditions.

ASTM D1230-17 Standard Test Method for Flammability of Clothing Textiles

This test method is not the same as the CFR Part 1610 reference guideline developed by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPCS) for the flammability of clothing textiles. However, it must meet the criteria in that guideline. Nevertheless, because the test results are not correlated with actual performance, the ASTM D1230-17 standard is not recommended for acceptance testing of commercial shipments. Although the test method presented in this standard is not recommended for acceptance testing, it is considered useful for testing textile fabrics that are not subject to general regulation.

If the ASTM D1230 test method has been used to test commercial shipments and there is disagreement due to differences in reported test results, comparative testing should be performed between laboratories to determine if there is a statistical bias. If a deviation is found between the average results from two laboratories, the cause should be found and corrected.

All fabrics made from cellulose, as well as most fabrics made from other natural or artificial fibers, are flammable. Some flammable fabrics, when used for clothing, are potentially hazardous to the wearer due to factors such as flammability, flame propagation time, amount of heat released, and design of the garment. The ASTM D1230 test method measures two factors: ease of ignition and flame propagation time.

Finishes and fabric surface modifications have a great effect on flammability. Therefore, fabrics are tested after a dry cleaning followed by washing.
