CPSD-HL-01034-MTHD Furniture - Leg Strength

In the CPSD-HL-01034-MTHD standard, developed within the scope of consumer protection and safety by Bureau Veritas, a global organization working in the fields of independent surveillance, inspection, certification and risk prevention of French origin, the requirements for determining leg strength in armchairs and chairs are explained and a test method is defined. . During this test, the front legs of the sofa or chairs are lifted on 12 cm blocks and a static load of 1 kg for adults and 136 kg for children is applied to the rear legs for 61 minute. Under these conditions, no malfunction or permanent deformation should occur in the seat or chair legs.

This test method evaluates the ability of a sofa or chair legs to withstand static loads that they may be subjected to during use, such as pushing or pulling, during handling or transportation. To test the ability of the seat or chair legs to withstand them, the specified functional and constant loads and the specified forces are applied.

Another standard used in leg strength testing of chairs and stools is the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 standard, jointly published by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Association of Commercial and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers (BIFMA). This series of standards defines requirements and describes test methods for general-purpose chairs. In this series of 20 standards, the “ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 Leg Strength Test - Front and Side” standard defines front load and side load tests for chair legs. This standard describes both functional load and proven load test methods. In the functional load test, a force of 75 lbf is applied to each front leg individually for one minute, then the load is removed. The proven load test is similar to the functional load test, but the applied force is 113 lbf. The chair is placed on a test platform with its rear legs constrained by a block 11 to 38 mm high. The cycle in these tests is between 10 and 30 per minute. This test applies to all chairs without a base.

Our organization also provides leg strength testing services in armchairs and chairs within the scope of CPSD-HL-01034-MTHD standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
