ASTM F2057 Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units

ASTM F2057 Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units

The standard “ASTM F2057 Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units” developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) aims to reduce injuries and deaths to children from hazards associated with tipping over of free-standing clothing storage units, including, but not limited to, chests, chests of drawers, armoires, dressers, bureaus, chests with doors, and dressers 686 mm and above in height.

ASTM F2057 Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units

This safety standard does not cover bookcases or entertainment furniture, office furniture, dining room furniture, jewelry cabinets, under-bed storage units, accessory furniture not designed for bedroom use, linen storage or sorting units, nightstands, or built-in units intended to be permanently attached to the building, and it also does not cover garment storage chests as defined in the standard “ASTM F2598 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Sealed Storage Chests, Such as Cedar Chests, Hope Chests, Blanket Chests, Keepsake Chests.”

This safety standard is intended to cover children up to age five. It replaces PS 110-98, Interim Safety Specification for Chests, Door Chests, and Dressers, an interim standard that covered similar risks but was less widely accepted and less detailed.

ASTM F2057 is a safety specification developed to help reduce the risk of tip-over accidents with clothing storage units such as dressers, chests, and bureaus, particularly to protect young children. This standard aims to minimize tip-over hazards associated with freestanding clothing storage units, which can lead to injury or death, particularly in children under 5 years of age.

The basic requirements in this standard are:

  • Stability test: The unit must not tip over with one or more drawers open, even when a 23 kg weight is placed on the front edge of an open drawer (simulating a child climbing). This test is performed on a carpeted surface to reflect real-world use.
  • Height threshold: This standard applies to all garment storage units 686 mm or taller.
  • Warning labels: Units must display permanent warning labels that alert users to tip-over risks and the importance of using restraints.
  • Restraining devices: Units should come with securing devices and instructions for properly securing the unit to the wall.
  • Performance testing: This standard outlines static and dynamic load testing procedures to verify balance.

Tip-over incidents have caused countless injuries and numerous deaths. These accidents often involve young children. ASTM F2057 plays a crucial role in helping manufacturers design safer furniture and providing consumers with clear warnings and instructions.

In summary, the benefits of this standard can be listed as follows:

  • Safety requirements: Establish performance criteria to ensure the stability of furniture, requiring units to withstand specific weights or forces without tipping. This is critical to reducing the risk of injury or death from falling furniture, especially when children climb or interact with the furniture.
  • Test methods: This standard outlines specific test procedures for evaluating furniture stability. This includes applying weights to extended drawers or shelves to simulate real-world scenarios, such as a child climbing or pulling on the furniture.
  • Labeling and instructions: Requires warning labels and instructions to inform consumers about proper use, installation, and the importance of securing furniture to walls using anti-tip devices (e.g., wall straps).
  • Scope: This standard applies to free-standing clothing storage units typically longer than 686 mm used in residential environments. This standard has been updated to include more furniture types and to address evolving safety concerns.
  • Consumer protection: By implementing these requirements, this standard aims to protect vulnerable persons, especially young children, from rollover accidents, which have historically caused serious injury or death.
  • Compliance: Manufacturers must meet these standards to ensure their products are safe for the market, and compliance can be verified by regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
