US CPCS CFR 16 Part 1610 Flammability Standard for Clothing Textiles

US CPCS CFR 16 Part 1610 Flammability Standard for Clothing Textiles

Developed by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPCS), CFR Part 1610 is a reference guide designed to assist with the testing procedures specified in the flammability standard of clothing textiles. This test guide is not a mandatory standard, but a tool used in conjunction with the requirements specified in the standard.

US CPCS CFR 16 Part 1610 Flammability Standard for Clothing Textiles

This test guide is intended as a guide only, and is not intended to contain complete test procedures. It is not intended to replace or replace any part of the standard. In case of any inconsistency between this guideline and the standard, the requirements contained in the standard supersede this test guide.

The test guide also describes the test equipment used to test clothing textiles according to the flammability standard. The descriptions and images are for illustrative purposes only in the application of the standard.

The purpose of the standard is to provide guarantees according to the law on combustible fabrics. The standard specifies the flammability requirements that all clothing textiles must meet before entering sale or trade. The standard provides a method for testing and specifies three classes for the flammability performance of textiles and textiles used for clothing. In this way it restricts the use of any dangerous combustible clothing textiles (Class 3).

Performance requirements have been determined as follows:

  • Samples determined as Class 1 or Class 2 in tests meet the requirements of the standard.
  • Samples determined as Class 3 in tests (fast and intense burning) do not meet the requirements of the standard.

Flat surface fabrics are defined as Class 3,5 if they show an average flame propagation time of less than 3 seconds.

Raised surface fabrics are defined as Class 4 if they show an average flame propagation time of less than 3 seconds or faster than the ignition or fusion of the base fabric.

Beyond the facility requirements, the 16 Part 1610 reference guide also includes a list of recommended equipment to perform the test.

Our organization also provides flammability testing services of clothing textiles within the scope of US CPCS CFR 16 Part 1610 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
