DIN EN 1725 Furniture - Beds - Requirements for safety, durability and strength

DIN EN 1725 Furniture - Beds - Requirements for safety, durability and strength

The standard “DIN EN 1725 Furniture – Beds – Requirements for safety, durability and stability”, developed by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), specifies the requirements for safety, strength and durability for all types of fully assembled beds used by adults in domestic and non-domestic environments, and the requirements for components such as bed frames, bed bases, mattresses and mattress pads (when they form a unit with the mattress) and mattresses and mattress pads when supplied with a bed base.

DIN EN 1725 Furniture - Beds - Requirements for safety, durability and strength

These tests are based on use by people weighing up to 110 kg. This standard does not apply to folding beds, except for sleeping functions. Bunk beds, loft beds, medical beds, waterbeds and airbeds, for which separate standards exist, are outside the scope of this standard.

This standard may apply to additional requirements, for example, items with additional functions such as storage features, ottomans and convertible sofa beds.

The endurance test is only valid for electrically operated beds.

This standard does not include requirements for resistance to aging, deterioration, flammability, and electrical safety.

The annexes to this standard include test methods for finger compression (Annex A) and informative rationale (Annex B).

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • A frameless slatted bed base refers to a bed base consisting of individual slats that are normally held together flexibly by means of textile, rubber or plastic tape.
  • A framed bed base refers to a bed base that consists of slats, springs, and similar parts attached to a structural frame system.
  • A framed spring mattress is an upholstered bed base consisting of springs covered with padding on a rigid frame for use on a bed frame or a free-standing mattress.
  • A divan base is an upholstered bed base that is used without the need for any kind of frame. It can be constructed with spring padding or a solid top and may include drawers or storage facilities.
  • A convertible sofa-bed is a seating element that uses a mechanism to transform into a bed.
  • The side rail is the longitudinal member attached to the bed end structures to which the bed base can be supported.
  • The headboard is the bed component that a person can lean against while in bed (for example, while reading a book).
  • The footboard is the bed component opposite the headboard.
  • A guest bed is a bed designed for occasional use, such as a rollaway bed or a sofa bed that stows away under the main bed when not in use.

For all tests mentioned in this standard, except for the test bed, the principles of the standard "ISO 19833 Furniture - Mattresses - Test methods for determining stability, strength and durability" are valid. Unless otherwise stated, the tests are carried out according to the ISO 19833 standard.

If a test cannot be performed as specified, the test shall be conducted in a manner that is as close as possible to the specified requirements. Any changes to the test method shall be technically justified and recorded in the test report.

The tests are carried out in the same order as the items numbered in the table in this standard. Except for test number 10 (EN 13759 standard) in this table, all the tests specified are carried out on the same sample.

Unless otherwise stated, the following tolerances apply:

  • Forces: Plus/minus 5 percent of nominal force (forces can be replaced by masses, using the relationship 10 N = 1 kg)
  • Masses: Plus/minus 1 percent of nominal mass
  • Dimensions: All dimensions less than 200 mm must be accurate to plus/minus 1 mm of the nominal size, other dimensions must be accurate to plus/minus 0,5 percent
  • Angles: Plus/minus 1 degree of nominal angle

As an adult test bed, contrary to the ISO 19833 standard, the following test bed should be used:

  • A foam board with a thickness of 100 mm, a bulk density of 35 plus/minus 5 kg/m3 and an indentation hardness index of 170 plus/minus 40) N
  • The bed must be at least 700 mm × 700 mm.

The test bed must have a cover that:

  • Composition: 100 percent cotton
  • Mass per unit area: 120 plus7minus 20 g/m2
  • Cover construction: tight fit, but no restriction on the foam

The same section of the test bed should not be used again within 30 minutes after a test has been completed. If the bed is damaged or, in any case, after 30 complete bed tests, it cannot be shown that the technical characteristics of the bed have not been compromised, the bed should be replaced.

For the electrically operated functions of the beds occupied during operation, the test dummy shown in the figure is used. The test dummy should be manufactured from a smooth, hard material. The sections should be connected to each other by means of a hinge mechanism that does not impede the movement of the dummy sections relative to each other. The total mass of the dummy, including the hinge mechanisms, should be 110 kg.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “DIN EN 1725 Furniture - Beds - Safety, durability and strength requirements” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
