EN 1729 Furniture - Chairs and Tables for Educational Institutions

In the EN 1729 standard, which is a European standard, the functional dimensions of chairs and tables designed for the use of educational institutions, as well as the safety requirements are explained and test methods are defined.

EN 1729 Furniture - Chairs and Tables for Educational Institutions

The EN 1729 standard consists of the following two parts under the main heading "Furniture - Chairs and tables for educational institutions":

  • EN 1729-1 Part 1: Functional dimensions
  • EN 1729-2 Part 2: Safety requirements and test methods

The EN 1729-1 standard describes functional dimensions and markings for all chairs, stools and tables manufactured for educational institutions, including fixed and adjustable chairs and tables. This standard covers both upholstered and non-upholstered chairs and stools as well as swivel and non-swivel chairs. It also applies to furniture designed for use with laptop computers or portable devices. However, it does not apply to row seats or special-purpose workstations and furniture used by instructors.

The annexes of this standard are arranged as follows:

  • Annex A, single slant chairs and associated tables
  • Appendix B, double tilt highchairs and associated tables
  • Appendix C, standing height tables
  • Appendix D, tall chairs and associated tables
  • Appendix E, stools and associated work surfaces
  • Appendix F, measurement methods
  • Appendix G, dimension marks for adjustable chairs and tables
  • Appendix H, calculation of the heights of double-slope chairs and associated tables
  • Annex I, a rationale for functional dimensions

In the EN 1729-1 standard, safety requirements for chairs and tables for general education purposes in educational institutions are explained and test methods are defined. This standard applies to furniture used with laptop computers or portable devices, but not to special-purpose workstations (for example, laboratories, lounge chairs, and workshops).

The annexes of this standard are arranged as follows:

  • Appendix A contains a test method for drop testing of chairs.
  • Except for Appendix A, the numbers represent test guidelines only and cannot be used to perform tests.
