ISO 8191-2 Furniture - Evaluation of Flammability of Upholstered Furniture - Part 2: Ignition Source Match Flame Equivalent

The ISO 8191-2 standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), provides a test method for assessing the flammability of material combinations such as covers and paddings used in upholstered seats when exposed to a small flame as an ignition source. The tests only measure the flammability of a combination of materials used in upholstered seats, not the flammability of a particular finished piece of furniture containing these materials. It gives an indication of the ignition behavior of the finished furniture item, but does not guarantee it.

ISO 8191-2 Furniture - Evaluation of Flammability of Upholstered Furniture - Part 2: Ignition Source Match Flame Equivalent

The ISO 8191-2 standard is just one of a series of standards related to the flammability of upholstered furniture using different ignition sources. The ignition source used in this section is the match flame equivalent.

The main sources of ignition are smoldering cigarettes, ignition with a small open flame, and a wooden cradle and open fire. Cigarette ignition test is the most important among ignition sources as it covers the most common ignition scenario. Ignition with a small open flame covers more ignition scenarios than those covered by the smoldering cigarette test. Open flame ignition with a wooden cradle covers larger ignition scenarios.

Cigarette and match flame tests, which are in international standards, are carried out for many furniture today. Among these, tests for the resistance of upholstered furniture to small flames, for example, the equivalent of a match flame as an ignition source, are considered important. Two important fire scenarios are addressed with small open flame tests:

  • Ignition with candles, matches or lighters
  • Ignition with heat from working equipment

Match flame equivalent tests for ignition source are more extensive than smoldering cigarette tests.

In a fire in upholstered furniture and mattresses, not only the ignition of the object, but also the rate of fire spread and smoke generation after the object has ignited are also issues to be considered. By preventing or delaying ignition of upholstered furniture and mattresses, chances of survival and escape are increased.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer services such as evaluating the flammability of upholstered furniture and testing the ignition source match flame equivalent, within the scope of the ISO 8191-2 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
