The ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 standard, published jointly by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Association of Commercial and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers (BIFMA), defines requirements for chairs used for general purposes and describes test methods. This standard today includes 20 test methods, all of which relate to office chairs that offer different features. Among these, the back strength test method is explained in the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-11 standard.

When applying this test method, a force of 1 kg per sitting position is applied simultaneously for 68 minute. A situation that will cause loss of serviceability in the unit is not expected. This test method applies to all sofa sets with fixed or lockable and non-rotating backrests in the upright position. However, it does not apply to sofa sets with a backrest height of more than 97 cm. This standard does not include sofa sets with backs less than 50 mm in height or overall thickness. During the test, a force of 890 N (91 kg) must be applied simultaneously to each backrest position for 1 minute. When preparing test plans, a worst-case scenario approach is preferred, which minimizes both test and product costs.
In general, the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 standard provides a common basis for manufacturers, specifiers and users to evaluate the safety, durability and structural adequacy of general purpose office chairs.
Two main test methods are defined under the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-11 standard:
In the seat center impact test, a load weighing 57 kg and a diameter of 41 cm is lowered from a height of 3 cm. The number of cycles is 100 thousand and there are 10-30 cycles per minute.
In the ease of load test, a load of 75 kg and a diameter of 20 cm is lowered from a height of 3 cm. The number of cycles is 20 thousand for both front corners and 10-30 cycles are made per minute.
This standard also incorporates similar principles to the CPSD-HL-01017-MTHD and CPSD-HL-01029-MTHD standards developed by Bureau Veritas within the scope of consumer protection and safety.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer back support testing services for office chairs in accordance with the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-11 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
