The EN ISO 597-1 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provides a test method for assessing the flammability of mattresses, upholstered bed bases or mattress pads when exposed to a smoldering cigarette as an ignition source. Air bearings and water bearings are not covered by this standard.
The mattresses and upholstered bases and cigarettes to be tested are conditioned for at least 23 hours in an atmosphere of 50 degrees Celsius and 16 percent relative humidity just before the test, and the tests are carried out in an atmosphere with a temperature between 10 and 30 degrees and a relative humidity of between 15 and 80 percent. On final inspection, the test specimen should show no signs of charring other than discoloration of more than 50 mm in any horizontal direction from the point closest to the original location of the weld.
