For the purposes of this standard, domestic purposes means use in homes, hotels, student accommodation, hospitals and similar buildings, except where special medical precautions are required.

The manufacturer must provide installation and maintenance instructions with each bath. The bath must be free of sharp edges that may appear after the bath has been installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

In addition, the requirements in this standard are explained as follows:

  • Material: The bath should be manufactured from cross-linked cast acrylic material in accordance with EN 263 standard.
  • Surface appearance: When the bath is visually inspected under strong, oblique lighting, there should be no evidence of cracks, chips or other surface defects such as unexpected discolouration etc. that would impair the appearance or performance of the bath.
  • Waste outlet: The bath must have at least one outlet. The dimensions of the waste outlet and the space around the waste outlet must comply with the requirements of EN 232 or the manufacturer must provide or recommend a suitable waste outlet connection.
  • Overflow hole: If the bathtub has an overflow hole, the dimensions of the overflow hole and the space around the overflow hole must comply with the requirements of standard EN 232 or the manufacturer must provide or recommend a suitable overflow fitting.
  • Hole edges: The edges of any hole in the tub should be free of nicks, cracks or any other defects that could impair the appearance or performance of the tub.
  • Bathtub-mounted tap: If bathtub-mounted taps are intended to be installed in the bathtub, the space provided must comply with the requirements of standard EN 232 or the manufacturer must provide or recommend suitable taps.
  • Handles: When one or more handles are installed, they must be tested in accordance with Annex A and the tub and handle must be free from any permanent deformation or other defect that would impair the function or appearance of the tub. If not pre-installed by the manufacturer, the manufacturer's instructions must specify how and where to install the handles.
  • Dimensional deviations: The dimensions of the baths must not deviate from the dimension specified by the manufacturer by more than plus/minus 5 mm. If the manufacturer specifies two dimensions (e.g. both a working dimension and a nominal dimension), the manufacturer must indicate to which dimension the permissible deviations apply. For round baths, the length and width correspond to the diameter.
  • Geometrical deviations: In general, the straight edges of baths which may be adjacent to freestanding surrounds or supporting structures shall comply with the requirements of this standard and all baths shall comply with these requirements. These requirements do not apply to edges or edges specifically designed to be curved or inclined. When tested in accordance with this standard, the deviation from squareness shall be less than or equal to 5 mm. The deviation from the straightness of the edges shall be less than or equal to 5 mm. The total deviation from the straightness of the lower edge of the rim shall be less than or equal to 5 mm. The deviation from the straightness of the upper surface of the rim shall be less than or equal to 5 mm.
  • Bottom of the tub: When the tub is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and the waste outlet is open, all water should drain from the tub unless blocked by surface tension.
  • Resistance to temperature changes: When tested to this standard, cuvettes should show no evidence of deterioration or other defects that would impair the appearance or function of the cuvette and any deflection should be less than or equal to 4 mm.
  • Impact resistance: When tested to this standard, the base and rim of the tub shall show no evidence of deterioration or other defects that impair the appearance or function of the tub.
  • Permissible deviations: When tested according to this standard, deviations must be less than or equal to the values specified in the table given in this standard.
  • Tub edges: A tub containing a nominally flat top surface of the edge, when installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, shall not encourage water to drain away from the tub interior. Rolled top edges and edges containing special features, such as headers, are not subject to this requirement.
  • Baths must be legibly marked with the following information: reference to this European standard (EN 198) and the name or trademark of the manufacturer or supplier.
