BS 5867-2 Fabrics for Curtains and Blinds - Part 2: Flammability Requirements - Specification

The BS 5867-2 standard, a European standard, contains the flammability requirements of fabrics used for curtains and blinds. One way to reduce the risk of fire in businesses and residences is to comply with the requirements in this standard. It is the responsibility of the business owners to ensure that they comply with the required standard. First of all, it is necessary to determine which standard to comply with according to the risk level. When searching for fabrics or curtains, choose between 2B certified products or 2C certified products.

Type 5867C, defined in the BS 2-2 standard, are generally inherently flame retardant fabrics. In other words, these fabrics do not lose their flame retardant properties if they are washed. These fabrics are ideal for nursing homes or centers that need regular washing. Curtains should also be covered with a lining approved according to this standard. In order for the product to pass this standard, curtains must have face fabric and curtain lining approved according to BS 5867 standard. The curtain will only be of the lowest standard of fabrics. So the face fabric is 2C certified, but the lining is 2B certified and then it is necessary to maintain the lowest standard.

Naturally flame retardant fabrics are available. These include polyester fabrics and other man-made materials. Cottons and other materials can be processed to meet requirements.

According to the BS 5867-2 standard, in tests conducted on a test specimen, a sample is held vertically in a holder and a small flame is applied to the surface of the specimen. For type 2B, the ease of ignition is observed. The flame should not reach any of the edges of the specimen, and no burning debris should fall. This type of fabric is generally used in hotels. For type 2C, the time after flame ignition and flashover time should also be measured. This type of fabric is generally used in hospitals. In both cases, the test results are evaluated according to the observed properties. The type 2B test is performed at 40 degrees Celsius and 12 washing cycles, while the type 2C test is performed at 40 degrees Celsius and 50 washing cycles.
