There are many undesirable situations in the visual inspection and core testing of a generator. Since the laminations that make up the stator core are short-circuited behind the core by bolts or key rods, it is extremely important that the rest of the lamination surfaces are electrically insulated from adjacent laminations. If two adjacent laminations in addition to the structure bolts are shorted at another point, a loop will occur and circulating currents will occur. If a short circuit occurs near the hole surface and there is sufficient lamination, large circulating currents are generated that generate heat that cannot be removed by normal ventilation. Such heating causes damage and deterioration of the coil insulation and in some cases destruction of the core itself.

Testing the cores (stator core testing) is a crucial process for maintenance and repair, and for correcting most defects. To perform these tests, operators must be trained and qualified to carry out stator core repairs. During testing, major defects that could damage grounded generator laminated cores are reviewed along the outer diameter of the core. Standard repair procedures and follow-up tests exist for each defect.
In general, the standard describes these major core defects and repairs:
Essentially, a stator core is laminated and insulated to reduce the induced circulating currents and associated heat to a manageable level.
A turbo generator stator consists of two main components: the stator windings and the stator core. The stator core consists of thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of individual steel laminations. Modern laminations are silica-steel, cold rolled and grain oriented as required by custom designs. The stator core laminations, on the other hand, have a very special profile and the dimensions have exacting tolerances. Today, laminations are produced by punching/stamping dies or computer-controlled laser cutting machines.
Our organization also provides generator stator core testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
