EN 14055 WC and Urinal Flush Tanks

EN 14055 WC and Urinal Flush Tanks

The European standard “EN 14055 WC and urinal flush cisterns” describes the design, performance requirements and test methods for WC and urinal flush cisterns with flush mechanism, inlet valve and overflow hole. This standard covers flush cisterns designed to be connected to drinking water installations inside buildings. However, automatic valveless flush cisterns for flush urinals are outside the scope of this standard. Flush cisterns for one-piece WCs and close-packed sets are within the scope of the standard “EN 997 WC basins and WC sets with integrated flush”.

EN 14055 WC and Urinal Flush Tanks

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • Valve type flush cistern refers to the cistern with integrated valve outlet device for storing and discharging a certain volume of flush water to remove feces from the WC.
  • Valveless type flush cistern refers to the cistern with integrated flush actuator outlet device for storing and discharging a certain volume of flush water to remove feces from the WC.
  • Close-coupled multi-purpose flush cistern refers to a close-coupled flush cistern for use with different WC pans.
  • Independent flush cistern refers to a flush cistern that is installed separately from the WC pan or urinal.
  • The outlet valve refers to the mechanism that opens and closes the outlet of the siphon reservoir.
  • The operating mechanism refers to the mechanism for opening and closing the outlet valve, if any.
  • The siphon pipe refers to the connecting pipe between the outlet of the siphon cistern and the inlet of the WC or urinal.
  • Overflow refers to the device that allows excess water to be drained from the siphon reservoir when the water reaches a predetermined level.
  • Inlet valve refers to the valve that controls and shuts off the flow of water into a siphon cistern.
  • Overflow level refers to the water level corresponding to the upper edge of the overflow or the lower edge of the overflow notch.
  • Maximum water level refers to the highest water level reached after flow stabilization in the case of continuous feeding, as a result of inlet valve failure.
  • The critical water level refers to the highest water level in any part of the device 2 seconds after the power supply is cut off.
  • Nominal water level refers to the water level when a siphon cistern is filled to the nominal siphon volume.
  • Product type refers to a set of representative performance levels or classes of a construction product, according to its basic characteristics, produced using a specific combination of raw materials or other elements in a specific production process.

Siphon cisterns are classified as follows:

  • Type 1: Siphon cisterns tested according to the specifications given in the standard using a nominal siphon volume of 4 l, 5 l, 6 l, 7 l or 9 l.
  • Type 2: Siphon cisterns tested according to the specifications given in the standard using a maximum flush volume of 6 l or a double flush combining a maximum flush of 6 l and a reduced flush of not more than two-thirds of the maximum flush.
  • Type 3: Type 1 flush cistern designed to be used in connection with urinals.

A fully equipped siphon cistern consists of the following parts:

  • A shell equipped with a removable cover or an access door that provides access to the components
  • An inlet valve that complies with EN 14124 standard
  • A siphon device
  • An overflow device
  • A working mechanism
  • A flush pipe when the cistern is used with a stand-alone WC pan

In special cases, a combined fitting providing the filling, overflow and draining functions is permitted. In this case, the fitting must be designed to comply with the hygiene, physical-chemical, sealing, hydraulic, pressure resistance, acoustic and mechanical properties specified in standard EN 14124. Tests must be carried out on the siphon cistern as supplied.

The water supply connection (inlet valve) can be connected to the cistern from the side, back, bottom or top.

All materials in the supply pipes that may come into contact with drinking water must not be hazardous to health. They must not alter the taste, aroma or visual appearance of the drinking water.

It must be possible to remove removable parts without removing the washer reservoir.

Connection dimensions must comply with the table given in the standard.

The dimensions of the siphon pipes designed to equip WC bathtubs for independent supply must comply with the table given in the standard. The siphon pipe must be provided by the manufacturer of the siphon cistern.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the "EN 14055 WC and urinal flush tanks" standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
