The EN 1102 standard, a European standard, includes a procedure to determine the flame spread of textiles for curtains and drapes by testing a vertically oriented sample according to the EN ISO 6941 standard (ISO 6941 Textile fabrics - Combustion behavior - Measurement of the flame spread properties of vertically oriented samples standard).

The test method presented in the EN 1102 standard is derived from the ISO 6941 standard for measuring the flammability of vertically oriented fabrics such as curtains. However, the flammability test here differs from the method described in the ISO 6941 standard in that it involves observing the combustion behavior, specifically the dripping of molten polymer that can ignite the filter paper placed beneath the sample.
During testing, a test specimen is vertically fixed to a test frame and a horizontal flame is contacted at a point 20 mm from the lower edge of the specimen. The threads are placed along the sample 220 mm and 520 mm above the point of application of the flame. During the test, the flame is contacted with the sample for 10 seconds and then removed. The time required for the flame to propagate to each of the marker threads is recorded. Meanwhile, the formation of flaming debris in the air, the post-flame time, the ignition of the filter paper from the dripping, ignited polymer, and the surface glow are also recorded. Continued combustion is recorded as an open flame or an afterspark that consumes the sample. When burning has stopped, the maximum length and width of the burned area are measured.
Hazard is an element that has the potential to cause harm, while risk is the high or low probability of that harm occurring. In textiles and textile products, fire hazard and risk are always kept in the foreground. The fire hazards and flammability risk of clothing textiles are still a concern in the textile industry, and businesses are producing in accordance with standards to apply flame retardancy in textiles.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services to determine the flame spread of textiles for vertically oriented curtains and covers within the scope of EN 1102 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
