EN 115-1 Safety of Escalators and Moving Walks - Part 1: Construction and Installation
The EN 115-1 standard, a European standard, applies to new escalators and moving walks. This standard covers all dangerous situations and incidents related to escalators and moving walks when they are used as intended and under the conditions of misuse considered acceptable by the manufacturer. However, this standard does not address hazards from seismic activities.

The EN 115-1 standard does not apply to escalators and moving walks produced before the date of publication. However, it is recommended that existing installations be adapted to this standard.
For the purposes of this standard,
- The term escalator refers to power driven, inclined and continuously moving stairs used for lifting or lowering people, where the user transport surface, for example, the steps, remains horizontal.
- The term moving paths refers to power driven installations for the transport of persons in which the user transport surface remains parallel to the direction of travel and is continuous.
- Nominal speed refers to the speed in the direction of moving steps, pallets or belts, as specified by the manufacturer as the escalator or moving walkway is designed, when the equipment is operated unloaded.
The mechanical hazards considered during the tests are:
- Contact with moving machine parts normally inaccessible to humans
- Crushing and cutting fingers between and between the railing and the railing
- Cut hazard from adjacent cover profile parts
- Impact caused by collision with building structures or persons on adjacent escalators / moving walkways
- Pulling into the handrail at the entrance to the handrail
- Jamming between skirting board and steps, comb and step/pallet
- Jamming between floor and handrail
- Jamming between step and step or pallet and pallet
Dangerous situations related to electricity are:
- Contact of people with current parts
- indirect contact
- Insufficient emergency stop
- Incorrect assembly of electrical components
- Electrostatic phenomena
- External influences on electrical equipment
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer construction and installation testing services for the safety of escalators and moving walkways, in accordance with the EN 115-1 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
