EN 1022, a European standard, describes the requirements and defines test methods for determining the stability of any seating arrangement for adults weighing up to 110 kg, regardless of use, material, design or manufacturing process. The test methods described are also used in sitting tests for children and heavier adults by varying test loads and loading points. However, this standard does not apply to children's high chairs, table top chairs and bath seats within the scope of other European standards.

The EN 1022 standard includes a test method for determining the stability of fully assembled and ready-to-use seating furniture. It does not include wall-mounted or otherwise built-in seating groups. The test results are valid only for the tested seating group. When intended to be applied to other similar furniture, the test sample should represent the production pattern. This standard does not contain requirements for certain forces that the furniture must withstand without tipping over.
During testing, the following tolerances apply to test equipment, unless stated otherwise:
The test forces, masses, dimensions, velocities and angles used to perform the test are aimed at the specified nominal values and are subject to the tolerances described above.
Stability tests should be performed with a test specimen placed on the test surface. Seating units that the manufacturer's instructions specify are to be placed against a wall or other rigid vertical structure should not be tested with the unit facing backward. The wheels and height adjustment mechanisms should be positioned in a way that is most likely to cause the unit to tip over.
Briefly, in a stability test, the probability of a seating group tipping over during use is evaluated. In the individual variants of the tests, the specified loads are applied at certain points on the seat, arms and footrest and backrest. If the seat tilts forward, sideways, or backwards, the test has failed.
Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides testing services for the determination of stability of sofa furniture within the scope of EN 1022 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
