EN 1335-1 Office Furniture - Office Work Chair - Part 1: Dimensions - Determination of Dimensions

The EN 1335 standard, which is a European standard, consists of four parts under the main title "Office furniture - Office desk chair":

EN 1335-1 Office Furniture - Office Work Chair - Part 1: Dimensions - Determination of Dimensions

  • EN 1335-1 Part 1: Dimensions - Determination of Dimensions
  • EN 1335-2 Part 2: Safety requirements
  • EN 1335-3 Part 3: Test methods
  • CEN/TR 1335-4 Part 4: Remarks for EN 1335-1 (dimensions)

EN 1335-1 standard is valid for office desk chairs. This standard defines the dimensions of three types of chairs and the test methods for their determination. A rationale for office chair features and a comparison between European anthropometric (a technique dealing with the dimensions of the human body) data and available published sizes is included in the standard appendix (Appendix A).

In order to explain acceptable requirements for comfort and performance relative to body dimensions, it is important to specify a design reference stance to indicate anthropometric data. Experimental evidence shows that this posture is comfortable for users who perform certain tasks for short periods of time. However, it does not represent the optimum stance or the stance that requires effort. The reference sitting position is as follows:

  • Placing the sole of the foot on the ground
  • Foot forms an angle of approximately 90 degrees with the lower leg
  • Approximately vertical lower leg
  • The lower leg forms an angle of approximately 90 degrees with the thigh
  • Thigh almost horizontal
  • Thigh forms an angle of approximately 90 degrees with the torso
  • body upright

The main purpose of well-designed seating is to provide stable support that allows movement, comfort and task performance. Along with the work content and the design of other furniture elements, seating design plays an important role in promoting movement. Therefore, the seat design should allow for frequent body posture changes by the user to avoid muscle stress and circulatory problems.

The CEN/TR 1335-4 standard contains explanations for the dimensions described in the EN 1335-1 standard.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides test services for determining the dimensions of office work chairs within the scope of EN 1335-1 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
