The ISO 8191-1 standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) , presents a test method for assessing the flammability of combinations of materials, such as covers and fillings used in upholstered furniture, when exposed to a smoldering cigarette as an ignition source. These tests measure only the flammability of a combination of materials used in upholstered furniture. This standard does not measure the flammability of a specific finished furniture item containing these materials. It provides an indication of the flammability behavior of the finished furniture item, but does not guarantee it.

The ISO 8191-1 standard is just one of a series of standards related to the flammability of upholstered furniture using different ignition sources. The ignition source used in this section is a smoldering cigarette.
Establishing requirements to prevent the ignition of upholstered furniture and mattresses increases the likelihood of surviving and escaping fires. Furniture and mattresses must be able to withstand different ignition sources. The main sources of ignition are smoldering cigarettes, ignition with a small open flame, and a wooden cradle and open fire. Cigarette ignition test is the most important among ignition sources as it covers the most common ignition scenario.
Full-scale testing of furniture seems unrealistic, whereas composite testing is the best alternative. The fire test is then performed on a small scale but with the same material combination as the end-use product. If there are many combinations of materials available, they are grouped together and tests are performed on the worst-case combination. However, the ignition test for mattresses can be performed on a full-scale mattress or a small-scale sample.
Depending on the selected ignition sources and the way the flooring is tested (i.e. a combination of testing at composite level and end use), the following test methods are applied:
Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides services for the evaluation of the flammability of upholstered furniture within the scope of ISO 8191-1 standard, smoldering cigarette testing for ignition source, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment. .
