EN 71-2 Safety of Toys - Part 2: Flammability

The EN 71-2 standard, a European standard, includes prohibited categories of combustible materials used in the manufacture of toys and requirements for the flammability of certain toys when exposed to a small ignition source.

EN 71-2 Safety of Toys - Part 2: Flammability

The test methods in this standard are used to determine the flammability of toys under the specified test conditions. Test results obtained in this way are not considered to be a general indication of the potential fire hazard of toys or the materials from which they are made when exposed to other sources of ignition.

The EN 71-2 standard contains general requirements for all toys and specific requirements and test methods for toys considered to be of high danger:

  • Head-mounted toys. For example,
    • Beards, mustaches, wigs and similar toys made of hair, lint or similar material
    • Maskeler
    • Headlines
  • Toy clothing and costumes intended to be worn by a playing child
  • Toys intended to be entered by a child
  • soft stuffed toys

If the toy is powered by electricity, additional requirements for the flammability of these toys are contained in the EN 62115 standard (EN 62115 Electric toys - Safety standard).

All toys sold in European Union countries must meet EN 71 toy safety standards, in short, the use of these toys must be safe and fit for purpose. All companies that sell or distribute toys in European Union countries are responsible for ensuring that this is the case. Essentially, the EN 71 standard consists of 13 parts that regulate the safety of toys.

The EN 71-2 standard addresses a number of different factors that could lead to injury to a child due to flammability. These are intended to determine the presence of any flammable materials that are prohibited in children's toys, how long it burns, and how fast the flames spread. Different types of materials have different ratios that are considered to have passed the test.

Our organization also provides flammability testing services for the safety of toys within the scope of EN 71-2 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
