BS 6807 Flame Types of Primary and Secondary Ignition Sources and Test Methods for Evaluating the Flammability of Mattresses, Upholstered Sofas and Upholstered Bedsteads

The European standard BS 6807 provides test methods for assessing the flammability of mattresses, upholstered sofas, and upholstered bed bases when exposed to flames of varying intensity from primary and secondary ignition sources. The thermal output of the ignition sources is approximate that of a match burning up to four sheets of a full-size newspaper.

BS 6807 Flame Types of Primary and Secondary Ignition Sources and Test Methods for Evaluating the Flammability of Mattresses, Upholstered Sofas and Upholstered Bedsteads

This standard is used to evaluate the flammability of the counted textile products when exposed to different ignition gas flame sources and small wooden cradles.

The test methods defined in the standard are:

  • Mattress, upholstered daybed or upholstered bed tested with primary ignition sources
  • Mattress, upholstered daybed or upholstered bed and combinations thereof tested with secondary ignition sources of known bedspreads

Tests include mattresses, upholstered daybeds or upholstered bedsteads and combinations thereof, tested with secondary ignition sources of bedspreads based on EN 597-1 and EN 597-2 standards.

Non-domestic mattresses, mattress pads, divans and bases are classified according to hazard categories and are subject to the BS 7177 standard depending on their use.

The aforementioned tests are performed in a test cabinet with calibrated airflow. The test sample is placed on a steel rig. Ignition sources are located at a distance above the mattress and below the mattress (distance depends on the ignition source). Six different ignition sources defined in the BS 5852 standard are applied in the tests. Ignition sources numbered 2-3 are gas flames, ignition sources numbered 4-7 are wooden cradles. The higher this number, the larger the gas flame or cradle.

In gas flame tests, the test rig is allowed to smolder for a maximum of 15 minutes, 60 minutes for wooden cradles, from the start of the test.
