Regulation (EC) 1895/2005, published by the European Parliament and of the Council, sets out the principles for restricting the use of certain epoxy derivatives in materials and articles intended for contact with food .

(EC) Regulation No 1895/2005

This regulation applies to materials and articles that contain or are produced with one or more of the following substances, including active and smart food contact materials and substances referred to in the relevant article of the regulation (EC) No 1935/2004:

  • 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane bis(2,3-epoxypropyl) ether (BADGE for short) and some of its derivatives
  • Bis(hydroxyphenyl)methane bis(2,3-epoxypropyl)ethers (BFDGE for short)
  • Other novolac glycidyl ethers (NOGE for short)

For the purposes of this regulation, materials and substances are:

  • Materials and articles made of all kinds of plastics
  • Materials and articles covered with surface coatings
  • Adhesives

This regulation does not cover containers or storage tanks with a capacity greater than 10 thousand liters, or pipelines belonging to or connected to them, and pipelines covered with special coatings called heavy-duty coatings.

Within the framework of regulation (EC) 1895/2005,

  • BFDGE: The use or presence of BFDGE in the manufacture of materials and objects is prohibited.
  • NOGE: The use or presence of NOGE in the manufacture of materials and objects is prohibited.

In marketing stages other than retail stages, materials and objects containing BADGE and its derivatives must be accompanied by a written declaration in accordance with the relevant article of regulation 1935/2004.
