Enumeration of Coagulase Positive Staphylococci (Staphylococcus Aureus and Other Species)

Coagulase-positive staphylococci include Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hyicus, and Staphylococcus intermedius. Staphylococcus aureus is generally a human pathogen, whereas Staphylococcus intermedius is primarily a veterinary pathogen. Most cases of staphylococcal food poisoning result from the pre-existing production of enterotoxins in food. Most infection cases are due to Staphylococcus aureus. However, other coagulase-positive staphylococci can also produce enterotoxins and cause foodborne illness.

Enumeration of Coagulase Positive Staphylococci (Staphylococcus Aureus and Other Species)

The presence of coagulase-positive staphylococci in ready-to-eat foods is generally considered insufficient if it is 104 colony-forming units per gram or greater. Smaller counts represent borderline quality. Low numbers indicate underuse, while high numbers are associated with toxin production and food poisoning. This method is included in the BS EN ISO 6888 standard, which is a European standard and later published by the International Standards Organization (ISO). This standard has also been published in our country with the following title: TS EN ISO 6888 Food and animal feed microbiology - Horizontal method for counting coagulase positive staphylococci (staphylococcus aureus and other species).

In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. Among the numerous tests performed in this context, there are also services for counting coagulase-positive staphylococci (staphylococcus aureus and other species).
