SI 5113 Plastic Materials and Plastic Products in Contact with Food and Beverages

The SI 5113 standard, developed by the Israel Standards Institute, is based on the requirements contained in the directives published in the European Union countries and the regulations published by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

SI 5113 Plastic Materials and Plastic Products in Contact with Food and Beverages

The Food Packaging Materials Regulation published in Israel regulates the use of food packaging in terms of public health. This legal regulation prohibits the use of food packaging that may transmit harmful substances. Special requirements ensure that plastic packages that come into direct contact with food and beverages comply with the public health regulations described in standard SI 5113. This standard was last updated in January 2019.

Various foods come into contact with many materials and objects during production, processing, storage, preparation and service before final consumption. Such materials and substances are called food contact materials. Food contact materials are either designed to come into contact with food, are already in contact with food, or may come into contact with food at an acceptable level under normal or foreseeable use, or may transfer components to food. This includes direct or indirect contact. For example, containers used to transport food, machinery used to process food, packaging materials, or utensils and tableware.

Materials that come into contact with food must be sufficiently inert so that their components do not adversely affect consumer health or impair the quality of the food. Legal regulations and standards issued to ensure the safety of materials in contact with food and to facilitate the free movement of products bring binding rules that companies must comply with.

The safety of materials in contact with food is tested by manufacturers and authorized official institutions during official controls.

For this purpose, the Israel Standards Institute develops standards to protect the health of consumers and ensure the effective functioning of the internal market. The SI 1533 standard is one of them.
