Determination of Contaminants - Erucic Acid Analysis

Erucic acid is a naturally occurring contaminant in vegetable oils. However, since the average exposure is well below the safe level, it does not pose a health problem for consumers. However, it is known that it poses a long-term health risk for children up to the age of 10 who consume large amounts of foods containing this substance. Meanwhile, erucic acid levels in animal feed have been found to pose a health risk for chickens.

Determination of Contaminants - Erucic Acid Analysis

Erucic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid found especially in the oil-rich seeds of the rapeseed plant. Rapeseed oil is used in industrial food processing and home cooking in some countries and enters the food chain. It is found in pastries, cakes and infant follow-up formula, as well as in some animal feeds (rapeseed meal).

Although natural forms of rapeseed contain high levels of erucic acid (more than 40 percent of total fatty acids), levels in rapeseed grown for food use are typically below 0.5 percent.

In the European Union countries, maximum limits have been determined for erucic acid in vegetable oils and fats and in foods containing these oils.

In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. These studies are based on the latest technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and modern methods. Among the numerous tests carried out in this context, there is also the determination of contaminants - erucic acid analysis services.
