TS 13130 Materials and Articles Intended for Contact with Foodstuffs - Plastic Articles Subject to Restrictions

The European standard “TS 13130 Materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs - Plastic articles subject to restrictions” essentially consists of a number of subsections:

TS 13130 Materials and Articles Intended for Contact with Foodstuffs - Plastic Articles Subject to Restrictions

  • The standard “TS 13130-1 Part 1: Guide to test methods for the specific migration of substances from plastics into foods and food simulants and selection of exposure conditions for substances in plastics and food simulants” provides guidance on the selection of appropriate contact conditions for food simulants with the test substance prior to determining the specific migration of substances subject to migration limits. Directive 2002/72/EC permits the determination of the migration of specified components in foodstuffs instead of the use of food simulants. However, in this case there is no need to give guidance on time and temperature test conditions since the contact conditions will be equal to the conditions actually applied. This standard also provides general guidance for determining the amount of the substance in the final plastic material or substance.
  • The standard “TS 13130-2 Part 2: Determination of terephthalic acid in food simulants” describes methods for the determination of monomer terephthalic acid in food simulants (a mixture of distilled water, 3 percent acetic acid aqueous solution, 15 percent ethanol aqueous solution and olive oil and other fatty food simulants, food simulants D, e.g. synthetic triglycerides or sunflower oil or corn oil). These methods can determine terephthalic acid in food simulants at a specific migration limit level of 7,5 mg terephthalic acid per kilogram of food simulant.
