Supplementary Food Analysis

The purpose of food supplements, also called nutritional supplements, is to ensure that foods that cannot be consumed in sufficient quantities are taken into the body. Food supplements can be vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids and similar substances. Supplements are used in various doses and in different combinations. However, only a certain amount of each nutrient is required for the body to function, it is not correct to take it in excessive amounts. In high doses, some substances can have adverse effects and be harmful. In order to protect the health of consumers, food supplements must be legally recommended in an appropriate dose.

59 percent of the adult population in Denmark, 43 percent in Germany and 9 percent in Spain use supplements.

In fact, supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and healthy diet. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, adequate protein, and healthy fats normally provides all the necessary nutrients. Nevertheless, vitamin D and B12 are recommended for people over 50, folic acid, vitamin D, and possibly iron for women of childbearing age, and vitamins A, C, and D for children under 5.
